There, I finished this one. This is one of my favorites with the Seventh Doctor on point and a good outing for Ace. Klein is a fascinating character, it’s just a shame it took them so long to bring her back (her next appearance is MR #130). David Tennant is so good at playing villains. He’s menacing and slightly creepy and a good foil for Ace. Meanwhile, the speech the Doctor gives in Episode 3 about the cost of Klein’s golden age is excellent. I did hear the issues people have with the sound design this time, not bad enough to ruin the story, but definitely noticable in places. This also introduced the “McShane” arc that will continue in The Rapture and The Harvest. Great story, good guest cast, a highlight of the early Monthly’s. 9/10.
I have had a bit of a break from the Main Range for a while, so I’ll continue where I left it.
Horrible dystopian alternate timelines are my jam, don’t know what that says about me but it just works. And yes Evil David Tennant works a treat for me, I can even imagining David Tennant channeling Lieutenant Hemmings from Timewyrm Exodus - can’t imagine Tennant hasn’t read that in the Wilderness Years
The 7th Doctor and Ace, no sorry, McShane are perfect for this story. And Elizabeth Klein is just one of my favourite original characters from Big Finish, I just love her character development.
The issues with the production are bad I must agree, but the story really carries me through.
Vampire Nazis? Sounds like my kind of story, makes me think of a mix of Hellboy and Blade And I loved Project Twilight…
To sum up, I really like Colditz.
4,5/5 from me
Just finished this one. I rather enjoyed it. This and Just War from the Benny range and some of my favourite types of releases. They are smaller, more character driven. Honestly, I rather like that there is very little sci-fi in the serial.
Some of the comments about the sound design are right, but a little exaggerated. There are some stock sounds, and odd sound levels in the mix, but overall it is a solid improvement over some of the releases in the first couple of years.
I don’t see where ‘Emo Ace’ is in the story. She is badass as usual here.
A solid 4/5 from me.
You see I don’t think I exaggerated this at all because I found it almost unlistenable this time round. I can’t think of a single audio prior to this that is as bad - not even The Sirens of Time or any of the Benny stories that came before that (with the possible exception of Dragon’s Wrath).
There are literally scenes where the background noise cuts dead when characters start to talk - it’s awful.
I think it’s telling that the sound designers on this never worked on a Doctor Who audio again. They did do four Benny stories which I know I’ve not listened to for a long time and I wonder if they are as bad - they did do Dragon’s Wrath it appears.
I 100% do not hear what you are describing.
Ah well, no biggie. Ultimately you win in this situation because it really hurts my enjoyment of the story.
That’s interesting. It’s an 8/10 for me. Those problems are present but not enough to take away from the pretty serious story which I quite enjoyed on the whole. Maybe I was just razzle-dazzled by Nazi David Tennant.
I hear it, so at least we know that @deltaandthebannermen isn’t going crazy!
Do we really know that? I think that most of all the evidence points in another direction…
Well, he read the X-rated “kids’ book” that is Timewyrm: Genesys as a kid, so maybe you’re right

Erm I think you’ll find it was the comment about Delta and the Bannermen that started it…
Yes, this conflict dates back several weeks (months?) and will probably go on for as long as this forum is active!
