Enjoyed this one. I knew very little of Klein going into this, so was kinda shocked at her character! Also, surprised just how long it is until she returns, took them a while!

This was brillaint,
Proper gritty and dark, almost feels like a modern story like maybe out the 12th doctor era.
There’s a line at the end i reallly liked by Ace
“It’s time for me to grow up”
4.5/5 for me

Now and then, there are Times when I think I really fumbled it. Be it my silly Hobby Work (Writing) or doing a Comment on a Story. Sure at the End of the Day it’s never too serious when you don’t articulate your Thoughts well on a Doctor Who Story, but I am somebody who hardly if ever likes to leave that untouched.
I think I mentioned it a while back that I recently relistened to this Audio, why this one, you might ask. Well I think I did a pretty poor Job on commenting on it and I really wanted to ‘fix’ that. Having now relistened to this one, I am afraid I have to say: It clicked with me even less. I already mentioned the first Time around that there was some ‘meh’ Aspect to this Story. On its own, it’s very solid. There is frankly nothing wrong with it. Aldred and McCoy are great. Klein is an interesting Character, even if she really makes an Impact only in later Stories. I like some Twists and Turns. And of course David (Tennnat) plays it very well. The Story itself is also solid and takes it Subject seriously, the Dialogue has some great Bits to it.
And yet.. I just kinda don’t click with it. And I am not even sure why. On Paper this has a lot for it going, I love a good Historicals, I love 7 & Ace and this Story and really outside a lesser Sound Design, it has a lot for it going. Still, I don’t find myself going: “Yeah that was a great one” and more a “Yeah that was okay I guess”.
To be perfectly honest, I am not sure if I explained it all that well, but I thought I still share this Thought Process, if only to get my complicated Thoughts out for it and give it a more fair Shoot.

(I’d apologize for the Ramble at the Beginning  )

So as much as I think Doctor Who should do more unique historical settings instead of the Victorian Era and WW2 all the time, this one was really good.

The plot is timey-wimey in a really interesting way, someone from a different, darker timeline showing up is just a really cool idea, and the revelation that this was partly caused by another future Doctor is really creative. I liked the different characters and the setting, while WW2 again, was at least not London this time and instead deep in the heart of the German Reich, the hornets’ nest. And the setting of a castle doubling as a prison camp was cool too. It reminds me of The Great Escape which is similar in a number of ways.

One of the big things here is a pre-10 David Tennant playing a Nazi officer and he does it really well. Kurtz might just be one of the most despicable villains in Doctor Who, just in general, and when he’s in a scene I feel a mix of “wow he plays this really well” and “you complete and utter piece of sh-”. I disagree with the assessment that this story is “too edgy” like Project: Twilight was. Yes, Kurtz is absolute scum, but he gets his just desserts not just when he dies in the end (also I disagree Ace, he totally deserved that manner of death), but also constantly throughout the story not just from being verbally dunked on by Ace and the other prisoners, but also by Klein who clearly has his hands tied. I also don’t think his creepiness was of a sexual nature, but rather more of a sadistic nature a la Major Toht from Raiders of the Lost Ark. And the Nazi Germany victory timeline is done in an intriguing manner and not shallow, though I would have liked to have a bit more worldbuilding on that.

I thought the timey-wimeyness got a bit confusing towards the end though, and the climax didn’t feel like much of an actual climax. Ace leaving her name of “Ace” behind I also don’t like. You will always be Ace to me, not McShane.

The clear highlight of the story is Seven exploding at Klein with his “BUILT ON HOW MANY CORPSES?” speech.

8/10.

I liked this story, I thought the conflict between 7 and Klein was well written and performed, and David Tennant was great as Kurtz.

My main complaint about the story is Ace dropping her nickname and just going by McShane. Not something I can see her doing at all.
