I find this one a tad bit underrated. It’s super atmospherical, enjoyable to listen and really well-acted. I do think an ideal version of the script would have reworked the second half of the story a little bit because after a point Mel just becomes someone to be rescued. I also think we needed a epilogue of sorts, because I don’t buy that Mel wouldn’t leave this story not traumatised. She was dehumanised.
I remember not liking this one but I also gave it 3* so I must have thought it was okay. It didn’t leave a lasting impact though, I remember nothing of the plot
Mel accidently time travels and is stuck in 1782 until the Doctor rescues her. In the meantime she is helped by a friendly family, until misoginy runs its course and she’s striped of her identity, sense of self and agency.
I really enjoyed this one. One thing I’ve been thinking about lately is just how much I’ve been enjoying Mel on audio, and this again proves it to me. I felt so heartbroken for her in this one, what an absolutely devastating ordeal that she’s put through. The story itself was a really interesting concept, and genuinely went by so quick.
I’ve got to say Six really has the best stories so far in the main range, far better than all the others, and I’m loving the development/use of Mel.
I also did not enjoy this audio. I remember the overall setting of this story, but the actual plot did not hold my attention enough to make it worth remembering. I recall being bored every step of the way. If I want a story about Mel’s family, I’ll read Business Unusual.
A very “two halves” story. There are some things I absolutely adore about it: the Doctor’s steadfastness about getting Mel back hell or highwater, Uncle John as a pseudo-companion for the story, Jupiter. But the Catch-22 isn’t all that well done, Henry Hallam could have been a very sympathetic and interesting antagonist if not for the final moments, Mel is drugged and captive for most of the story, and the way they fix everything is a bit contrived. It’s saved by its absolutely fantastic performances but yeah.
I enjoyed this one, but I can totally see why people wouldn’t. Mind you, I just listened to it recently and really went into blind.
If there is anything I can praise, it’s atmosphere, it does do a lot of the heavy lifting with this one, because frankly the Plot is a bit odd. There are Aspects to it, the Way Time Travel is used here is done quite well. I do like how Mel-centric this one, I think Bonnie does give a good Performance. I enjoyed Uncle John. And I would be lying if I didn’t say it tried to do a lot of interesting Things, some of which I wish were fleshed out more, some others I am still unsure what to make out of it. Fleshing out is a good Word, probably, especially for the ending. I do feel like this Story desperately needs an Epilogue with Mel, considering she really went through a rough Time with this one, it doesn’t feel quite right how we never really deal with it at the End.
Yet another bizarre Beast to tackle in the Monthlies.
