Anime/Manga

I said in the Comics Chat that there’s probably enough to talk about on Anime and Manga for it’s own thread, so here it is!

What anime/manga are you watching/reading at the moment?

What are some of your favourites?

My Parter and I are currently making our way through One Pace. I have seen all of One Piece, but they haven’t seen any. I thought the “Kai” version would be a better fit. They are enjoying it so far.

Other favourites of mine are:

  • Dr Stone
  • Dragon Ball/Z
  • Detective Conan
  • No Guns Life
  • Deca-Dence
  • Naruto/Shippuden

I have a decent backlog from the past few years on my server.

My two personal favourite films of all time are Anime

  • Your Name which I think I watched at the perfect time in my life for me, year 11 (give or take) of school (age 15/16 for the non-brits (or aussies) among us), the emotional core just really resonated with me, I had to take a break in the middle of watching it at a point that let a massive twist just sit with me in a way that made it so much better, and god, the art, it’s just a beautiful film
  • Weathering With You which again just hit at the right time for me (a year or so after I watched Your Name), but this time I was able to watch it in the cinema with friends. The music, art, and atmosphere are all incredible, and there’s a moment where all the music is building to a climax and then just after it reaches it it all drops to just the sound of rushing wind which in the cinema was beautiful. On reflection I also think there’s something to be said about my particular cocktail of mental illnesses making that ending just so satisfying, but that’s something I could go on and on about.

Both of them have Makoto Shinkai as the director, and pretty much everything of his that I’ve watched I’ve loved. The Garden of Words is a really interesting character piece, Suzume has some of the best atmosphere of all his films, and 5 Centimeters Per Second is just so good, the first of the three shorts is probably one of my favourite films (again when I watched it helps a lot) and never fails to make me cry. The second and third are solid of what I remember, but they’re not quite as good imo

I mentioned a few in the other thread, so let’s elaborate a bit.

Stuff by Rumiko Takahashi:
Ranma 1/2: Martial arts harem comedy. Ranma moves in with the Tendos after having gone training with his scumbag father, but he got cursed where he turns into a girl when hit with cold water and back with hot water. He’s engaged to Akane Tendo… and his father’s also engaged him to a dozen or more women over the years who all either want to marry or kill him. (And some guys want to kill him as well…) Inspired generations of harem animes.

Maison Ikkoku: Godai’s about had it with his obnoxious neighbors and getting ready to move out… when Kyoko announces she’s taking over as the manager, and he falls in love with her and stays.

Urusei Yatsura: Aliens are going to take over the earth unless the lecherous Ataru can beat Lum in a game of tag. He does! And accidentally gets engaged to her.

Non-Rumiko stuff.

Ah! Megami-sama (Oh! My Goddess!): Keiichi Morisato misdials a phone number and accidentally calls the Goddess Help Line, where Belldandy answers and tells him she’ll grant him one wish. Thinking it’s a joke, he says he’s like a goddess like her to live with him forever… and it’s granted.

Tench Muyo: Space Opera with a million and one series/spinoffs.

Excel Saga: Some of the most bizarre stuff I’ve watched/read.

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya: Kyon becomes friends with Haruhi Suzumiya, who is convinced there are aliens, time travelers, and espers out there and forms a club to find them. She’s right… and they’re the other members of her club. She’s also God.

Serial Experiment Lain: It’s not atypical to not understand this one even after you’ve watched the whole series…

Hyouka: A lazy but highly intelligent guy is friends with a very curious girl in high school, and solves all sorts of small mysteries for her.

I could talk about other stuff like XXXHolic, Those Who Hunt Elves, Haibane Renmei, and more, but I’m pretty much as far as I feel like writing in one post at the moment…

Oh, somehow I didn’t mention “Kage Kara Mamoru!”. Not only is Mamoru a ninja, his entire family (including the dog) are, and they’ve been protecting their next door neighbors for 400 year.

He is assigned to protect Yuuna, which is difficult, as she has absolutely no self preservation instincts, and obliviously walks into danger at every opportunity. He also doesn’t realise she’s in love with him…

I used to be huge into anime, but I haven’t watched any in years (Doctor Who took over, basically). The last one I saw was My Hero Academia.

But some favorites I can think off off the top of my head:

Monster: Psychological thriller with ordinary characters and an ordinary plot (as in, no aliens or superpowers. It’s about a doctor trying to catch a young serial killer). I don’t like to watch long series, but I was too entranced by this one to put it down (its 96 episodes).

Erased: Another psych thriller involving a man who travels back in time to uncover the truth about his mother’s death

Tokyo Ghoul: Dark fantasy about a guy who transforms into a ghoul and has to learn to navigate the new society he now fits into

Clannad: Cute romance between students, kinda sad, but it’s a classic in the slice of life genre for a reason

I mainly like shows that span 1-2 seasons. If it goes any further, I won’t watch. The genres I usually gravitated towards was shonen, thrillers, and emotional slice of life.

I was introduced to anime (outside childhood Miyazaki films (Ponyo my beloved) and Pokémon) in middle school, watched quite a bit, and then never got back into it. I still rewatch some of my favourites every few years, but I haven’t really been interested in getting back into it.

The first anime I watched, as could be expected, was Death Note. I still think it’s fantastic.

This was one of my firsts, as well. I remember really liking it (though I was probably too young to watch it at the time), but S3 was still coming out and I don’t think I ever finished it. I haven’t revisited it since. Maybe I should.

Seconding this. Kimi No Na Wa changed my life, honestly. It’s a beautiful film and I can’t recommend it enough. I have a poster of it stashed away somewhere, the only of my anime posters that I’ve kept.

But the anime I really want to recommend is Assassination Classroom. It tells the story of a class of middle schoolers who have to kill an alien within a year. It’s only two seasons long, and somehow it manages to be extremely emotionally impactful in that time. The main character is heavily trans-coded and has bucket-loads of childhood trauma. It’s all represented very well and respectfully in an almost painfully relatable way (for me, at least). I love this show.

Not really into Manga, but I thought my boys might enjoy these that I saved from going in a dumpster yesterday :slightly_smiling_face:

Any good?

Solid. A solid couple hundred Euro right there. And this is 2 solid entry level mangas that have a lot of content.

Might not be worth that much, they are in Danish
