Angry Emoji Replacement

There is a bit of discussion behind the scenes as to whether we should replace the Angry Emoji reaction.

It has the potential to be used in an unkind, potentially trolling way.

Generally our little community uses it in a joking way, though, so before we make a unilateral decision, we wanted to throw it out to you lovely people.

There are a number of possible, fun options within our current emoji bank:

:zygon: :slitheen: :dalek: :dalek_sec: :vinvocchi:

  • Keep the Angry Emoji reaction
  • Replace it with the Zygon emoji
  • Replace it with the Slitheen emoji
  • Replace it with the Dalek emoji
  • Replace it with the Dalek Sec emoji
  • Replace it with the Vinvocci emoji
  • Replace it with something else (tell us below)

Iā€™d say keep it as the others donā€™t mean/convey anything, but I also donā€™t really care that much. Just throwing my two-pence into the discussion.

I mean, Dalek can convey anger or hatred, those are the only emotions it hasā€¦

:dalek:

I just think maybe thatā€™s a little difficult to tell what it is, especially when itā€™s small or on dark mode.

I like the Slitheen because itā€™s cute and has bug eyes and also conveys ā€œevilā€ to me, and it looks angry.

:slitheen:

The Zygon is also great but doesnā€™t really mean ā€œangryā€ to my, apart from it being almost the right colour.

:zygon:

But Iā€™m equally happy to just keep the angry emoji, just been a bit fed up recently of someone overusing it and trolling with it.

I think that for myself, Iā€™m okay with the angry face because I know you lot well enough now to know itā€™s used in a teasing way - however, as the community grows, I can see how that might be taken out of its intended meaning. Dalek would be my pick because as Shauny says, that says ā€˜evilā€™ but without the inflammatory implications of anger.

Iā€™d say replace it with eye roll but again, I think that could go the wrong way, even if it would be useful

I think a thumbs down or 0% emoji could be a good replacement, less outright hostile, more obviously joking. Iā€™m pretty sure we mentioned those as options not too long ago.

I am so desperate sometimes for a roll eyes emoji. Usually when the three man Scandinavia tourist board gets goingā€¦

Iā€™m more on the ā€œremoveā€ side. Partially more than a little fed up at having someone literally scrolling down a thread hitting the angry emoji on post after post, and partially, I tend to feel we should have something more Doctor Who related anyways.

Iā€™m fine with the angry emoji currently, I think itā€™s pretty well understood to be teasing among most users at least, I mean, itā€™s most common use is in the elimination games probably, and those are more like friendly competition anyway. I donā€™t mind replacing it either though, Iā€™d go with some generic one like thumbs down for milder disapproval or with the dalek. That one feels the most necessary to Doctor Who. I wouldnā€™t use the others for reactions since, especially on a small screen, they look too much like other things at a glance (zygon like a coronavirus, slitheen like the nauseous emoji, whichā€™d be worse than an angry face in my opinion, for example)

Oh I totally forgot about thumbs down.

That can signal that you disagree with a post without looking ā€œangryā€.

I wish we had that in the poll now

Also i see that no-one really uses thumbs up (I sometimes use it when someone asks about a feature and I use it to say ā€œyes thatā€™s comingā€)

Most people use :100: and I like that one a lot.

So yeah a 0% could work too, although that would need to be custom

I think the angry emote is good, but we should also have a thumbs down or some form of dislike thatā€™s not angry. Personally I think we should replace either the TARDIS or K9, because while itā€™s nice to have some Doctor Who emojis, I donā€™t think either of those actually convey anything meaningful as a a reaction

We did replace something with K9 but I forgot what nowā€¦

I need K9! Iā€™m not sure what he conveys, but he is very necessary! :k9:

Just wanted to say that thereā€™s not really any need to lose an emoji if we add some, we can have more than we currently have!

We replaced the  emoji with :k9:.

Oh yeah I remember, I quite liked the clap but not many people used it, preferring :confetti_ball: and it could be seen as sarcastic

Soā€¦ we could add :tardispink: without removing anything?

Ohhhh yea we added K9 as like ā€˜affirmativeā€™ instead of applause
