Appreciated Reviewer - Receive 1 like on 100 reviews Respected Reviewer - Receive 2 likes on 200 reviews Admired Reviewer - Receive 5 likes on 500 reviews
I actually think I did this badly. Asking for hundreds of reviews make these badges too similar to the “Reviewer Level” badges, and the “Admired Reviewer” rank is actually really difficult for anyone to get at all, because 500 reviews is a lot, and getting 5 likes on all of them would be a herculean task.
To make these badges more focused on review quality than sheer number of reviews, I am going to change the requirements:
Appreciated Reviewer - Receive 2 likes on 50 reviews. Respected Reviewer - Receive 5 likes on 50 reviews Admired Reviewer - Receive 10 likes on 50 reviews
Why I believe this is better:
All of these now only require 50 reviews. This is about having a smaller number of high quality reviews.
Doubling the ‘likes’ requirement for Appreciated, while halving the number requirement, makes this focus on quality, not quantity.
‘Admired Reviewer’ will still be ‘mythical’ after this change, as no-one has achieved it yet, but it will be much easier to achieve, and some are already quite close.
I will also add a requirement that these reviews come from a wide array of users - you can’t just get your 10 friends to like 50 of your reviews. The exact number will be secret and subject to change.
This may ruffle a few feathers because a small number of people are going to lose badges. But all badges are always in flux, as we learn more about how best to do them.
I am also doing this because soon these rank badges will become more important - they will be a factor in which reviews show first on a story page! So my suggestion is to spread links to your reviews far and wide to try and get more likes!
Definitely think this is a good idea, makes the achievements a lot more achievable, and encourages putting a lot more thought into reviews if you need more likes to get the badges, rather than making a lot of shorter reviews that people might just see and like!!
If I lose a badge (for a while) but in the process better reviews are encouraged, then so be it, seems like a good deal to me!
I also noticed that reviews that are (presumably) less than a week old now have a “New” tag! How neat! Like for example, on this page Sky Ray · · TARDIS Guide which we on the discord had chosen as our monthly (not really monthly) obscure story to review (after a short trip or two, and the famous Walter the Worm incident). Poor Sky Ray, all those words…
You know, I think to make the page feel better, you guys should read the reviews we have laid upon its poor, poor soul. And also like the reviews. And with that I mean specifically mine. You should like my reviews. All of them, in fact. Only the ones I did. It’s good for the review economy, trust me. And do it quickly too. You don’t want to miss out on liking a review with the new New tag, now don’t you?
Good update, I think it’s the right call to prioritise good reviews rather than many reviews.
This sticks out to me though. In my mind, green marks “complete”, so seeing lots of green on the review reader and on stories I’ve just finished is throwing me off a bit.
Happy to adapt if the majority prefer the new way though.
