I went with Ruby (Millie Gibson is a very good actor) and Graham (very funny and entertaining). Was very close to going with Yaz (great chemistry with Whittaker and was given time to see her character grow and evolve.)
It’s definitely Yaz and Ruby for me, even though Yaz is a little crowded out in the fam ensemble and Ruby’s overall story makes no sense at all, both actors are so good that they make the character more whole and real than some of the writing does. Yaz is so strong and has such great chemistry with 13 from basically scene one, for me it’s very much a 5/Nyssa situation, where this is one of my favorite Doctor/companion pairs, and yet the era’s writing only has them traveling alone together for the briefest moment (hence really looking forward to the audios!!). Ruby is this full paradox where she is one of Russell T Davies’ strongest characters, but only when she is nowhere near The Doctor. As long as she is off on her own, she can not just carry the adventure but kind of makes you wish you were watching a whole season of that show instead, a dark and creepy and serious sci-fi drama where Ruby Sunday deals with a different peculiar threat to Earth or time every week, sort of a Ruby Sunday X-Files, or Ruby & Steel lol. And she has several of the best scenes in The Reality War. I still don’t know why she made it snow, and neither does Russell, but she’s still a really great character. I had such high hopes for Belinda, at the start of this season I’d have put her in the running for this, but she ultimately has no character at all.
Really stretching the definition of companion here. I’m not honestly wild about any of them, don’t think we’ve legitimately had a good companion since Bill.
The quote you chose for Dan
I voted for the two middle aged men because I genuinely love both, but if Valarie were an option I’d vote for her twice
