What languages do you speak?

Languages I speak:

English (Native)
C#
C
Java
Javascript (unfortunately)
Python (barely)

I’ve tried to learn a few other actual languages, but the biggest hurdle for me is I don’t engage with things that require those languages enough to stay engaged. Maybe one day I’ll move to France (or, God forbid, Quebec) and learn to speak French.

English as my native language and French at a basic level, been learning for about a year and a half now with private tutoring.

Wish I could speak Gaelic to be honest but sadly it’s not on the curriculum in Scotland. It’s a shame really, seeing Wales embrace their historic language but we don’t. Then again, there’s been movement in recent years to make it more visible in Scotland, there aren’t many people that speak it either but lots of signage and stuff’s been updated to include it for like public services and ambulances !

Only English for this fool! I learnt some Spanish at school but it’s long gone now

I didn’t go into it because I went into it way earlier in the thread, but that’s very much where I am.

Native English speaker. Took two years of Spanish a long time ago and most of it didn’t stick. Watch anime and looked into Japanese, but mostly never did. Fascinated by language history and how it’s constructed, though.

And programming-wise, well, I know C/C++, Ruby, Python, multiple versions of Basic, a little Javascript, Pascal, Hypercard, though a long time ago on those two.

I am interested in Gaelic, and listen to music sung in it, but didn’t get further then looking at how things are pronounced.

Why you doing Faroese like that?

Native Portuguese speaker here, by virtue of being Brazilian. Handily, knowing Portuguese means I come pre-installed with a passable Spanish (meaning I get most of what I read/listen, but speak like a 3 year old). My German is at that awkward level here I get what people are telling me, but don’t have enough vocabulary to answer anything beyond ‘ja, genau’. I took Japanese classes for a bit when I was back home, but I’ve forgotten most of it beyond katakana and hiragana. English, duh, and big thanks to DW for that.

I’m pretty good at Python (my beloved), passable at C and Fortran (yeah…)!

ETA: How could I forget, I was learning Klingon on Duolingo. I can say very useful phrases like ‘the enemy is weak. good.’ and ‘the robot is lying’

I wasn’t referring to Faroese…

My main language is Turkish. I grew up with it, and it’s the language that still feels like home, no matter what else I learn.

I studied English in school, and over time it became a huge part of my life — especially through Doctor Who. That show didn’t just improve my listening skills; it shaped how I see storytelling and imagination.

I also learned a bit of German back in university — though honestly, I remember almost nothing now. Just the vague feeling of having once known how to introduce myself properly.

I’d love to explore other languages too, but with everything going on, I can hardly find the time or energy. Right now, my main goal is to master English well enough to create content fluently — maybe even write audio dramas for Big Finish one day. That’s the dream I’m quietly working towards.

And also, I know a little bit C#.
