What is your "Nerdiest" Hobby?

Hi all,

What is your “Nerdiest” Hobby?

I’ll go first.

I’m learning to write programs for the first Atari game system, the Atari 2600 from 1977!

It just might be the most quintessentially esoteric thing one can do on a computer… LOL!

I design and self-publish content for Dungeons and Dragons, as well as editing for other D&D Designers

Including working on a homebrew class that I’ve been slowly designing for a couple of years now, that’s nearing completion

Hi JayPea,

That is SO INCREDIBLY Cool!!!

I’m always wanted to learn how to play D&D (I know, and 80’s kid that never played D&D, WHAT?).

Seriously, that is a cool hobby!

Well, I do own a fair number of computers… including an Agon Light 2, which is a modern computer with a eZ80 processor that runs BBC Basic.

I’ve loaded up old Infocom games on it, and I do like text adventures, and games like rogue. (I’d say roguelikes, but a lot of roguelikes are not like rogue.)

I’ve gone though and done Linux From Scratch in a virtual machine several times. (Where you follow an online book downloading source code and compiling programs to build your own version of Linux.)

Been known to write fanfiction on occasion.

Have actually got code in some open source projects, though not under this name.

(Have also played plenty of D&D and other pen & paper RPGs.)

I create worlds from scratch for my stories. It’s basically creating fictional species, cultures, tech, religion, etc. I used to bounce between stories so I have 5 of them I’m working on but I’m mainly working on 4.

Hard to say, especially as I’m really bad at sticking with hobbies. I’ve dabbled in a lot of nerdy stuff but most of it never went far. When I was really into Star Wars, I wanted to build my own BB-8, but I lost interest like two days into that.
Things I’ve actually done include crochet and playing Pen and Paper roleplay, including reworking some stories to work for different rule systems (because my friends and I switched between DnD and a german system at some point). I also used to do quite a bit of math for fun, but as I’m now studying that, I don’t really want more of it in my free time.

Things I’m currently doing include writing fanfiction, attempting cosplay and writing essays about doctor who for fun (well so far it’s only been one, but I want to do more)

Snap!

It’s hard to tell if writing TTRPG adventures or making a daily Doctor Who Quiz is nerdier though.

Probably writing essays about Big Finish for fun, something I need to start doing again

I keep meaning to look at your TTRPG stuff, but never end up getting round to it, the brief glances I’ve had have looked great though!

Thanks. I would definitely give the Priest class a go but we rarely have time to actually play nowadays, and I’m the forever GM (when it comes to 5e).

I write my own stories in a fictional universe which Ive had since I was a kid. But I don’t like sharing it too much cuz I’ve been told I can go on about it too much to people who don’t care, so I keep it to myself now.

I also like to get lost in video games and to trophy hunt them. I’ve got 125 platinums since 2020 (my last one was Dead Space Remake a month ago)

My proudest platinum here is probably Predator: Hunting Grounds, Fall Guys, and For Honor. Though Dead Space and Returnal were pretty difficult too.

Some are “shovelware” games which only took a few mins, but so far this year I haven’t gotten any, and the majority of last year.

Atm I’m working on getting Vampire Survivors (while listening to Big Finish audios), Gris, and The Stanley Parable. Then I want to do The Lost Records on PS Extra.

I also play classic Doom

I don’t know if it 100% counts as a hobby since it’s recently turned into a legit school thing (after years of me wishing it could be a legit school thing), but I really like thinking about fandoms (mostly sci-fi fandoms) from a humanities/media studies perspective. Also I founded and run the science fiction club on campus.

Me? Having nerdy Hobbies?! NEVER!

We ignore my % on the Site for this Point

On the serious Side, I guess the closet to having a very nerdy Hobby would be my writing, which ranges from silly Discussion about Media to some even more silly (and frankly) bad Stories, be it “Original” Stuff or Fanfic, I suppose.
Love reading what the others said here! All sounds quite fun! :tada:

I don’t keep up with it that well because of scheduling and disability, but I am in the SCA and I have dressed up in a Viking outfit I sewed myself to go to an event that was largely made up of adults pretending to be in a medieval court, followed by adults eating a historical feast and sitting around chatting, largely while working on textile projects. I’d say that’s probably the nerdiest of all the nerdy things I do
Except maybe for the Tendi cosplay I’m making for a Star Trek con later this year

What? You watch or build or collect a bunch of weird robot creatures? Transformers? LEGO? I’m confused now!

My nerdy hobby?

Well, there’s this little British indie show called Doctor Who…
