Someone has an opinion, shock horror
No waying amirite
I can only describe my experience watching this as “multisensory ick”. I get that applying Vaseline to the camera lens is an Old Hollywood trick, but trying to look through the smeared visuals here honestly gave me a bit of a headache. As did hearing the Zarbi speak; even as someone who finds Merzbow relaxing (not even a joke, Hybrid Noisebloom is my go-to Zen soundtrack), I cannot abide this incessant bleeping noise in my ears.
I freely admit that getting me into a Classic six-parter is an uphill struggle. I’m of the opinion that if a DW story simply must exceed two hours, it should at least be as entertaining as The Daleks. And considering this shares the same director as TD, I don’t think of that as too big of an ask in this case. I can even get the comparisons to Georges Méliès I’ve been seeing around, as it definitely feels like a similar sort of abstract fever dream. (Albeit a far inferior one; this could only dream of being The Merry Frolics of Satan, or The Eclipse: Courtship of the Sun and Moon, or Cinderella 1899)
But ultimately, I just can’t with this. It pushed me well past “this isn’t for me” and right into “this is bad”. No shade on anyone who can see the good in it, and I find myself impressed once again by Delta’s optimism, but… yeesh. Never watching this one again if I can help it.
