Time Meddler good. I couldn’t get into it as much as some of y’all but it’s still a generally good runaround. The Monk is a great villain and needs to come back in the revival.
I saw The Time Meddler well after seeing the third, fourth and fifth Doctors interactions with the Time Lords, so seeing the first Doctor first meet another of his race wasn’t a surpise to me. Howevr, it was quite fun to watch how he interacted with the Monk and purposely disrupt his plans and disable his TARDIS.
I think this is a fun & interesting idea for a story, with a fun & interesting antagonist.
Peter Butterworth is just a joy to watch as the Monk. I know he comes back in ‘The Daleks’ Master Plan’, but I’d have happily had him return more. He’s got incredible chemistry with Hartnell and I think he would’ve been a blast to watch acting opposite Troughton’s Doctor.
But I love what we got of him in the two serials he appears in.
One day he’ll complete his to-do list!
His haircut is so silly I love it
It’s monastic! ![]()

I don’t have much to say about this one that others haven’t already said
It’s a really good story, contains a key milestone in the history of Doctor Who, and has some great companion dynamics with Vicki and Steven
I admit I didn’t really like Steven at this stage, seemed a bit too know-it-all. I did grow to liking him later.
It is nice to see Vicki handling the role of experienced companion for the first time.
Again, it has been said many times but Peter Butterworth is excellent at ‘monkery’!
7/10
The first pseudo-historical? The Monk is a funny villain, and a great concept to go along with it
For the longest time this was my favorite 1st doctor story. I think this is a great story I love the Monk I really wish (on TV) he came back more apart from Masterplan
I had watched the first episode of this serial twice, forgotten what had happened up to that point, and restarted, so this time I decided to plough through. What a fun little romp, and having grown up on a diet of Carry On, the planets came together. I became extremely attached to Ian and Barbara, but having loved Peter Purves in his appearances thus far, Steven really hit the ground running here and I’m really loving where Doctor Who is at at this point, especially in comparison to the first season.
My review here for any interested parties.
Also, funny of @MrColdStream to point out @deltaandthebannermen for his great review…when I came here planning to do the same thing. Aside from what has already been said, it’s really interesting reading a response with the commentary reflections of the production in mind, and it does make me actually consider just cracking open some of the Blu-Rays I have, rather than relying on iPlayer. Thanks for the good read (and for those other reviews I absorbed, too).
Onto the next season.
I was going to save this until I reached it in my Target novel reads but oh well. There’s not much I can say that hasn’t already. The Monk is a fascinating character to me. The third Time Lord (still unnamed yet) we meet and the third renegade. It was also a neat episode in trying to get Steven’s feet under him. He’s free, traveling, and starting to interact with people again. And I live Vicki who pretty much boils all answers down to ‘this is what is Supposed to happen’. I enjoy this episode a lot and it is one of my favorite First Doctor stories.
I’ve just finished rewatching this wonderful story, and it remains my fourth, and final, 10/10 from Season 2. There’s just so much to love about this story, nearly all of which has been touched upon by others here already, so I’ll just leave my final Season 2 rankings (today’s version, at least) and how the Season as a whole compares with Season 1:
- The Romans - 10/10
- The Rescue - 10/10
- The Time Meddler - 10/10
- The Dalek Invasion of Earth - 10/10
- The Chase - 8.5/10
- Planet of Giants - 8.25/10
- The Crusade - 8/10
- The Space Museum - 7.75/10
- The Web Planet - 7.5/10
With an average of 8.89/10, Season 2 just falls short of Season 1’s 9.03/10 average, which is rather shocking to me, as I’d always considered Season 2 my favourite Hartnell run.
I’ve just now watched the TotT Minisode for this story, so in closing I’ll simply say, “I’m not crying. You’re crying.”
