TV Club: The Space Museum

This starts really well but becomes less interesting as it progresses. Our TARDIS Team are all fine but the supporting cast weak. I’ve seen it a couple times so warched it with the commentary. Big mistake. Peter Purves is on it for some reason & feels the need to dominate the whole thing & basically shit all over the story. Comes across as a nasty man. One of the worst audio commentaries I’ve ever listened to.

I agree about Purves on the commentary. I don’t think he meant to be mean but it definitely comes across as rather nasty and you can audibly hear Maureen O’Brien give up trying to be positive about it. It doesn’t help that Glyn Jones is just as negative. It really put me off Purves for a while.

I’ve seen Purves at a couple BFI events. He clearly loved Hartnell but can’t resist little digs at the current show. Unnecessary Peter.

A lot of People say “An Unearthly Child” starts out amazing and then drops. Well, this is basically it for me. Episode 1 here is stellar and one of the very best from Hartnells Era. Sadly the rest is just very much whatever, some great Ideas and some great Moments, but pretty forgettable in my Eyes. It’s not bad, just very much whatever, and easily the weak spot of a stellar Season 2. A shame, this one had much more potential in my Eyes.

It’s alright. Started out strong but kind of fizzles out. A solid 6/10 for me.

My rewatch of this made me raise my rating. Everyone agrees that part 1 is amazing, but I must say that I really enjoyed the rest of the story aswell. Vicki’s plot is amazing.

Finally someone else manages to break away from received wisdom! It’s a great story for Vicki.

It’s okay to be wrong sometimes, but now it’s happening with worrying regularity!

No need to worry @MrColdStream . It’s okay to be wrong sometimes, which you indeed are about the Space Museum :sunglasses:

Rubbish, saved only by Episode 1, Doctor in a Dalek, and Ian munching Barbara’s cardigan. Ooer.

Munching on cardigans, since 1965. The beginning of the greatest love story never told.

But Vicki is marvellous in the later episodes basically sorting out the useless teenage boys and turning them into a proper rebellion. And Hartnell is delightful in the interrogation scene. When these ‘rubbish’ stories are cast asunder I don’t think enough is said about how brilliant the regulars always are.

I’m not a big fan of The Space Museum (find it a bit dull after the first episode) but I agree with Delta here.

You have a point. Vicki is great in The Space Museum. Unfortunately none of them are quite enough to save the thing from going under, for me. I appreciate good moments, but I can’t help but wish the overall story were stronger. Again, all subjective. I mostly lament the fact we get quite an unusual and experimental Episode 1, then it descends into quite a bog standard runaround type of story.
