Yeah, well, I haven’t read it so I don’t know how bad it is. But they might update teh text if it’s badly written.

One of my least favorite Hartnell stories by far, just like The Web Planet; It has good concepts, awful execution. The racist stuff doesn’t help either.

Personally ive experienced this story 4 times now:

  1. audio only (what a jumble of noise ep 3 was)
  2. Loose Cannon reconstruction (better but not by much)
  3. animated completely
  4. and the least significant I watched the animated bit for the first three parts then the surviving ep 4

And in all honestly this has consistently been one of my least favourite Hartnell era stories for a plethora of reasons. most prominently for me is the sheer lack of Hartnell in the story. I adore Steven as a character and honestly he is the most bearable person here, Dodo drives me up the wall in this story I have to say.

The story itself is weak in my opinion it has just never clicked with me, no matter how many times I watch it.

In all honesty the use of the N word in this story always sours the mood when listing or watching the reconstruction because it is an abhorrent word and has no place in Doctor Who, im very glad they edited it out of the animation completely.

The recon version I feel like is middling. Granted, I feel that way about a lot of missing episodes because I just struggle to pay attention to them. However, I really liked the animation they did for this one. It feels really trippy and wouldn’t work for any other story, but it’s great for this one

I have a severe weakness for the more fantastical side of DW. The Mind Robber, The Doctor’s Wife, Moffat’s entire aesthetic as showrunner; this is the Doctor Who that I love the most. Purely on the basis of this being the genesis of that mode for the show, I have fondness for it, but I also like just how surreal and spare the production values are. It feels like an early sprint for the perfection that Mind Robber would reach with similar ideas, and while there’s definitely problems with it (once again, I lament one of the show’s high points being connected to full-chested racism… dammit), the fact that it is partially missing just adds to the weirdness for me. Same with the animated reconstruction: The janky animation just makes the whole story that much stranger, which adds to it in my view.
