Looking back on it, I think this Episode is a great introduction but as an episode, it’s kinda just okay? Don’t get me wrong the moment where Eccelston bursts in and says “I am the doctor, nice to meet you rose, run for your life” is amazing. In general, both Billie and Chris make it a really solid piece, as a story? It’s fine. The Autons I find are very underused in Who and could be used for some greater effects. I think it’s very much solid, great way to bring Who into the 21st Century, other than that? Just an episode I respect more than I really enjoy/love.

Started a proper NuWho rewatch today in lieu of a New New Who episode to watch with breakfast. ‘Rose’ was as delightful as I remembered. Tense, funny, domestic, great introduction
Looking through this site and discovered this:
Looking through this and found this in the “Contact Us” section:
It’s not as effective now that we have the War Doctor in between Eight and Nine.
Also of note are mentions of the First Doctor and Susan, the Third Doctor, City of Death, Shada, and the R101 (from Storm Warning from Big Finish).
Also, there’s these:
Why don’t we ever websites like this any more?
Sarah Jane Smith would never work for The Daily Mail
But I hear it’s a steady job
Straightforward story, introducing the characters to a modern audience, with some silliness and some serious business along the way. It’s just solid Doctor Who, done well. Sometimes simple is key, especially for series openers.
This is actually a very good introduction to Doctor Who that still holds up 20 years later.
The Autons are scary, the action is exciting, the jokes are funny, everything just lands.
Something that surprised me is that it’s a much more fast-paced story than I rememberee. Thankfully this works in the episode’s favour.
In terms of the cast, Billie Piper excells as the main character, Rose, doing a phenomenal job of acting as the audience’s gateway into the world of the Doctor.
And as for the Time Lord himself - Eccleston is just superb!
A wonderful introduction to the Ninth Doctor, and Doctor Who as a whole.
I just started a challenge for myself of rewatching all of modern who. And we’re off to a great start. I believe this was a great episode to begin the modern era on if I’m honest and I’m glad they did.
