Trying out Torchwood Again

Cyberwoman is so good and it’s a crime that that costume makes everyone think it’s bad

They were probably trying to go for this sort of aesthetic with the Cyberwoman:

But definitely fudged it. I’d need to rewatch it but I never thought Cyberwoman was as bad as people made out. I’m pretty sure it was one of my favourites of that season.

I :purple_heart: the Maschinenmensch design. Metropolis is a masterpiece.

I honestly adore Cyberwoman and it’s my favorite from season one overall. As soon as I saw the costume, I immediately headcanoned that Ianto purposefully designed it like that (ignoring the flashback scenes ofc) so that if she ever went outside she could still cover herself with clothing and hide the metal casing.

Then again as a kid, my dad bought some Doctor Who figures and one of them was Cyberwoman/Lisa. But I was a kid who wasn’t allowed to watch Torchwood so I used to pick up her doll and stare at it for hours trying to recall what episode she was in, and sad that I hadn’t seen it.

I can agree with you on that one.
I honestly never thought about the design of that costume, I just kind of enjoyed the pain of the episode and the general plot.

I think there is a good story somewhere in Cyberwoman, but I think it really needs a rewrite for the emotional beats to really shine through.

Yes the design is not great, but hey it is Torchwood at it’s super campy stage.

A fight between a Pterodactyl and a halfway converted Cyberman covered in BBQ sauce underneath the city centre of Cardiff in a secret base? That’s a concept I can get behind

But sorry to say, I think this story is absolutely ruined by Gareth David-Lloyd’s quite frankly atrocious acting while holding Lisa at the end. It is so wildly over the top with his facial expressions and really weird sobbing, I just find it so laughably bad. It wasn’t until Children of Earth that I could take Ianto serious again.
(Yes, yes I know, bring on the hate-mail😉)

I really didn’t know where this sentence was going…!

I love GDLs acting in Cyberwoman tbh. The only problem I have is with the camera work, when he’s arguing with Jack and it’s zoomed in on their faces. From behind the scenes, there’s the image taken of that moment from afar which looks so much better.

The ugly crying is so realistic too imo. Cried like that when my kitten was killed. It’s not really the same kind of grief if someone has died naturally, or of an illness, compared to if they were killed, or in Lisa’s case shot.

He’s only 23 in that scene (Ianto, not GDL), and I think it’s a good way of showing the culmination of bottling up all that bittersweet Canary Wharf trauma for multiple months.

In GDL’s most recent story though, he does make a joke at Ianto’s expense about him always crying and being a bit pathetic. And exaggerated.

“Rhi locked herself in the bathroom, and the other one won’t stop crying!”
“Jesus, all that boy does is bloody cry!!”
Ianto: “But he’s only a toddler isn’t he?”
“Yeah, but he does take it way over the top!!”

So self aware :sob::sob:

I hear you, I do.
But, no.
Sorry.

I genuinely think that that is one of the very worst performances in the entire history of the Whoniverse.

I do not think that that performance is realistic even in regards to the circumstances that has befallen Ianto.

Nope.

Just finished Episode 5: Small Worlds. This is one that I actually remember fairly well from my original viewing. And, after watching it again, that was really good, dark with more mature themes, but not overly graphic (either in sex or violence). It feels like an episode of X-Files. The creature design was good and the acting was really good in this. I like that we’re starting to dig into Jack’s past (post-Doctor Who) here. While all five regulars were in this, I feel like this was a primarily Jack and Gwen episode. We need a Tosh-focused episode now to round out the regular cast (yes, I know there’s one coming up). I don’t really have anything else to say. This was really, really good and there’s nothing to really complain about or nitpick. Maybe, that the Mara was only namedropped? Anyway, I think that’s it. Next up, Countrycide.

Watched Episode 6: Countrycide tonight. It was good, but not outstanding. have I said yet that Owen’s a horrible human being? I’m not a horror person, but this didn’t stray too far into horror for me. The reason for the murders was never really explained. Were they just canibals, or was there a specific medical reason for the behavior? Anyway, decent episode, again getting X-Files vibes. I liked the double meaning of the title. I’d rate it 4/5.

So far, I’ve been enjoying this season. We’ve had a enjoyable, intriguing season opener, an unnecessary sex-themed episode, a thoughtful mature criminal minds/cold case-style episode, a more mature version of a Doctor Who episode, a monster-of-the-week X-Files episode and a psychological-horror X-Files episode. Next up: we get our Tosh-centric episode with Greeks Bearing Gifts.

The blonde policeman is the same actor for Ianto’s dad in Disco. I just find that so funny considering he was part of the Countryside family too

The reason was chillingly delivered by Owen Teale when he whispered to Eve Myles: “Cause it made me happy”

Yup, they were just cannibals, and they reveled in it. Beyond the very worst of humanity “Lord of the Flies” stuff. :grimacing:
This is the creepiest the Whoniverse has ever gotten for me.

@DarthGallifrey Hey, now I’m watching Torchwood too! Rewatch for me.

I’ve finished episodes 1-4, and you can check out my thoughts in some detail here:

What an interesting start to the series. Somewhat mixed in tones and quality but decent! We have pretty similar opinions on these.

I do remember not liking episode 5, so I’ll have to see what it’s like for me this time around.

I enjoyed Episode 5. It’s one I actually remembered from watching Series 1 back around 2011/2012. I haven’t written full reviews, but I have given my thoughts in this thread if you feel like going back and browsing those.

My eldest has just binged through the first two seasons (skipping anything ‘sexy’) and I walked in on them this evening at the end of Exit Wounds in floods of tears.

I’ve told them to have a break before trying Children of Earth…

I have been sorting through the site, adding in Collectables where they were missing, and realised I didn’t have any of the Torchwood DVDs or Blu-Rays on there!

That’s corrected now: Torchwood DVDs & BluRays

And now I’m so tempted to buy Series 1-4 on Blu-Ray (even though I have them on iPlayer. I want to see the special features…).
