They’re two very different characters and I refuse to name favorites when I love them both for very different reasons. Benny is such a unique and long-running companion who I think is on the same level as The Brigadier in terms of legacy to the fandom and importance to the Doctor. River has such a compelling and beautiful story that intertwines in and out of the Doctor’s. They both shine whether they are on their own or with the Doctor (and in some cases, steal the Doctor’s spotlight). Two sides of the same coin, they get along spectacularly as rivals and friends. I hope that we get another crossover between the two in the new series of The New Adventures of Bernice Summerfield.

I feel that a pairing between the two is a strong enough concept to carry its own set, just like the next one for 9, honestly.

I didn’t go through any Benny story yet, HOWEVER I would like to point out that being an archeologist seems much more relevant to her character than River’s.

Based on the topic/ question I voted for Bennie as archaeology seems more embedded into her character.
However I prefer River Song (both character and story arch).
I’ve only heard a couple of Bennie stories, but they didn’t grab me.
The Bennie/ River team up was fun.
When I’ve worked through the backlog of Big Finish stories, I’m sure I’ll give Bennie a proper try and will probably love her too.

Shame that this Poll has been long since been closed. Anyhow, I still can add my two cents to it: While I like both Characters (I mean how could you not Bowerman and Kingston are just two lovely Actresses!), I must admit delving deeper into the EU made me appreciate Benny much more. Doesn’t help when River is Part of some Episodes, which I really don’t like, such as LKH, but then again less the Fault of the Character and more so something to explain my preference a bit.
But again a close Race honestly, both lovely played, both great Characters, both very much important in their own Corner of the World of Who.
