Okay, finally coming back to this after nearly a month to write up those last reviews
The Grief Collector - 9/10
My second favourite of the whole set, this feels like the perfect fairy tale.
While again I don’t think The Doctor would be in fairy tales they tell Gallifreyan children… eh, I can forgive it, the story is great. A person who can give you whatever you want, but there being a twist that you don’t truely get what you desire, is a great fairy tale trope, and the idea here that it’s all done in service of collecting the grief and tears of those he deals with is just such great imagery.
Speaking of great imagery, that last moment where the main character frees all the loved ones, smashing the jars and creating a tidal wave of tears (iirc) is also just so good.
The Three Brothers Gruff - 7/10
A little strange that the gallifreyans are telling their kids so many stories about the sontarans, but hey ho.
This story is another fine one, it feels very fairy tale in it’s morals (teamwork, brotherhood, courage, strength, and intellect all being useful, etc), but the story itself and the way it conveys those themes feels quite functional.
Like, it’s a good story, dont’ get me wrong, and the way they get those themes across is good, but that’s just it, it’s very much just ‘good’ as it were. It never does anything to make it rise higher than that
Sirgwain and the Green Knight - 8/10
A really fun twist on a classic, and a perfect setting for the Ice Warriors.
Experiencing more of the Ice Warriors in expanded media, I’m starting to really get the appeal of them, and I think this story does a great job of showing why. The main Ice Warrior could very easily come in and kill people, then demand aid, instead he makes a challenge, asks for aid in response, and uses that challenge as a way to judge how worthy he feels the people here are.
And the fact that after he judges Sirgwain worthy due to him coming, despite knowing that in doing so he would be killed, he just sorta leaves, idk, it’s just very funny, works great, and is very fairy tale to me.
