This review is actually a tiny bit personal, but it’s very very positive.
I loved this story so so much

Ah sorry to potentially disappoint, but they’re non binary, not a trans guy
Hope we did get some trans guys though some time too!
What? How did I miss that? (By thinking about the past/present/future thread of course)
Tbf it’s never explicitly said outside of the interviews, but their pronouns are they/them throughout so I think it’s easily missed!
Thanks. Guess I didn’t pay much attention to pronouns. We don’t differentiate among she, he and singular they in spoken Chinese. I only ever notice when other’s refer me with feminie pronouns but that doesn’t happen much
No worries! I do hope we get some trans men more in BF for sure though. While I’m always happy to get as much representation of NBs as we do, I know trans men are sadly underrepresented in media generally, let alone in BF
Loved it! Ian and Barbara! Gina’s mum! The Tourist question mark!? Very funny, captured 13 & Yaz perfectly.
Brilliant! A great season opener, wonderful to have 13 & Yaz back. Tim Foley, well he is so skilled at balancing character moments with the traditional Doccy Who elements. This is one I will be relistening to soon.
I relistened to this one already
Yes I don’t know how I missed some of the big points the first time I listened, I blame my husband who kept bothering me
(If my headphones are in, only talk if it’s important!)
Looking forward to the next one which has already been announced. I pre-ordered the first 5 back when they were first announced, so it’s like a little present to myself every other month.
Well, that was fantastic! I gave it 4.5 stars - I think it’s pretty perfect as Doctor Who stories go, and it’s tied for my favourite Thirteen story on here (with It Takes You Away and The Power of the Doctor). It was great to hear Jodie and Mandip back in this one, and the whole story was tons of fun (I loved the slasher/campy horror vibe). In particular, I loved the focus on the characters and their relationships here, whether that’s Yaz and Thirteen, Yaz and her friends, or the interplay between her friends - Tim Foley is fantastic at this, so I was expecting it anyway, but it’s still great to hear. Really digging into that relationship between this Doctor and this companion is the number one thing I was hoping for from this series, and this audio delivered in spades!
Other random observations/thoughts:
I thought it would be the dog straight away, then I doubted myself! Tim Foley knows how to throw me off the scent, even in comparatively straightforward mysteries like this one.
Loved all the little references to wider lore here - the Forest of Cheem, Ian and Barbara, Four and Sarah (is that more hints to another Doctor Orion Hood adventure, Tim?), vampires in the dark times…
I loved the little rug pull with Gina’s mum - for the most part, she’s the comic relief, but her truth scene is actually very sad. At least she gets a new pet at the end! All the side characters were really delightful here, again, as expected for a Tim Foley story.
I was a bit surprised to hear Mason mentioning nudes - would have thought that was a bit adult for Doctor Who. It definitely added to the vibes of the friend group though (hopefully Gina’s mum will have a word with her and she can call off that engagement, because it’s pretty obviously doomed!)
Very interested to see who or what the Tourist is - I’m planting my flag right now and saying it’s not a new time lord, but something else.
On the whole, a really solid start, anchored by charming performances from Jodie, Mandip and the wider cast, and a great script (as usual) from Tim Foley. I think this one will definitely enter rotation as a story I relisten to regularly, and I can’t wait to see where this series goes next!
I also relistened to this, but because I just liked it so much! It really holds up on relisten, a lot of the clues become blindingly obvious the second time around, I was kicking myself for not picking up on them the first time! Barbara being killed so only 10 life signs stay shown is cleeeeeever!
Excited for the season mystery: What is Gina’s Mum’s real name???
Gina’s Mum is somehow an anagram and she’s, I dunno, the Meddling Monk /silly
Mrs. Flood /j (please don’t do this BF)
Gina’s mum is the Tourist???
Bit weird that the vampire hitched a ride with the Tourist but we never even saw the Tourist… or did we?
That’s the best tou could come up with?
She’s obviously the Rani!
No! She’s CLEARLY Susan!
I notice we’ve got the name of the next 13DA now
Can’t she be both?
because she bigenerated?
