Series 4 and I’m torn between 10 and 5 for my second pick. I really think it has to be 10 though - Thin Ice is a vastly better episode than Victory, even if I have a great fondness for the skittle Daleks.
Voting the current season and Flux because these last few episodes have all been great and all been better than the last, and Flux had me absolutely hooked from the start and especially by the end of Once, Upon Time. Most of the others have at least one dud in there or are just solid but not necessarily like the best
Oh this is SOOOO tough. I wanna say S4, S9, S10, Flux and S2…
Purely based on the fact I may have recency bias.. I’m going with S9 and Flux. I think S9 is phenomenal and has one of my fave Doctor/Companion pairings, and the two parter is fab, then Under the Lake is just PHENOMENAL. Likewise, Flux just starts of chaotic in the best way, and War of the Sontarans is fantastic. Once Upon Time is a grower in my books, its shot up in my Flux rankings over the years.
S9 was close for me but the fact that it’s all two-parters so the opening three is in the middle of a story made me not want to when there were others up with it. (Though I guess Flux is in the middle of a story too, but that’s different)
There are so many seasons where the first two episodes are amazing the the third just tanks it; series 3, 5, 6, 8, 11, and 12.
I ultimately went with Series 4 and 9. Partners in Crime and The Fires of Pompeii are spectacular, and I quite enjoyed Planet of the Ood. Series 9 haa a single mid episode, and it’s none of these
Happy to see so many s10 enjoyers! The pilot isnt the greatest episode but its a comfort episode for me. Smile is just a great episode, then thin ice is amazing!
Very nearly went for S35, as I do love Under the Lake very much, but I’ve gone for Eleventh Hour/Beast Below/Victory and Deep Breath/Into the Daleks/Robot of Sherwood.
I’m very much a Moffat era fan.
S10 has such a strong opening 3 (as well as a strong run of episodes throughout, to be honest. Easily the best series of new who). The Pilot and Thin Ice are two of my favourites from that series!
Really tough, but eventually I settled on s9 and s10. The Magician’s Apprentice/Witch’s Familiar is a fantastic opener, enough to make up for Under the Lake just being the first half of a story, and The Pilot is a great beginner-friendly intro followed by two enjoyable episodes. If I had a third pick, it’d go to s4; it’s 3 wonderful episodes that foreshadow big events towards the end of Ten’s run, i just don’t think of it in the same “this is the beginning of a series” way…
Honestly, Series One’s opening trio were fantastic in a certain regard: they set up all aspects of the show brilliantly.
Granted, The Unquiet Dead doesn’t do it quite as well as the previous two but it does manage to set up trips to the past, questions on linearity and add onto Nine’s character arc brilliantly
Voted for the first three of Flux, really enjoyed the first Half of Flux, so it’s kinda a no-brainer. If I had to do a second Pick, it’s probably Series 10, with the third Place being S4 (seriously, Planet of the Oods and Pompeii are just so strong).
