The Ninth Doctor Adventures: Pandemonium

Demon of the Powell Estate. I have a feeling.

Could be - maybe we should wait until the next story and decide based on that.

I like that as a temporary one if you wanted, but if nothing specific comes to light in the next story then I’d say this is a pretty good one to have permanently.

Only problem is they’re not really ‘trapped’ until this story. They keep leaving and just returning. I’m not sure we even definitively know that they aren’t going elsewhere in between the first few stories and they do manage to get all the way to future High High Wycombe.

The power of the Powell Estate

Oh, this one was a fun, delightful, emotional listen! Fantastic, as the Doctor would put it!

A lively and emotionally rich entry that blends timey-wimey chaos with a poignant exploration of grief. Strong character work, especially for Rose and Jackie, elevates a slightly familiar premise, while the Powell Estate arc continues to build intrigue with hints of a larger threat.

Considering that the next story is a sequel to Station to Station, and the way this one ends on something laughing in the TARDIS, it could be the Grimminy-Grue isn’t just the villain of the next story, it could be the arc villain for at least the first half of this season. Station to Station ended on the Doctor invoking its rhyme, perhaps he didn’t exorcise it completely.

Pandemonium was…FANTASTIC. A strong story with emotional character drama, a recurring theme of this range.

A really lovely emotional story that also manages to be an excellent first part. The fact we know the next story is a sequel to Station to Station makes so much of this even cooler - when the characters start breaking down, they start speaking in rhymes and saying “you can’t escape”. The Grimminy-Gru spoke exactly like that!!!

I see this and raise to you - Series 1P (for Powell Estate), like how the Valarie 11DCs are Series 7V

Necromancing this subject because the trailer for Thirteen O’Clock just dropped - main takeaways are that the Doctor has fought this monster before and thought it banished, its servants speak in rhymes, there’s a character named ‘Mr. Grim’ that the creepy old lady knows well, and they straight up do the “you can’t escape the grimminy-grue” rhyme without saying its name explicitly - atp if it wasn’t a direct Station to Station sequel I’d be gobsmacked… OHHHH lord bring on June already

Very late to the party on this one, which is annoying because this is maybe my new favourite story of the year! Definitely the best of the range so far, it was funny, it was devastatingly sad, the character work and performances were impeccable. In a range that has consistently felt really fresh and original and yet completely in step with the 2005 series, this somehow feels even more fresh and original while still being entirely consistent with the rest tonally. More importantly, it doesn’t shy away from really digging into all the emotion and grief the characters are feeling. Magnificent, a well-deserved five stars and a favourite from me, as well as hearty praise for literally everyone involved.

I just wish I hadn’t waited until I was sat on the train to listen to it! I could hardly cry over the sad moments sitting in a packed carriage full of people on their way to Birmingham before 10am! At least the delay means there isn’t so long until the next one - this range is probably the best thing coming from Big Finish right now, I can’t wait for Thirteen O’Clock.

Normally I’d sit through another listen and then take some quotes and tidy up my review before posting, but I’m two beers in at a lovely pub garden in Sandwich listening to this and my, this might be one of my favourite audios ever and the review just flew out of me. The emotional core of it beats so loudly and it’s easily the most affected I’ve been by a Big Finish story yet. Got the clean five stars for me, and I credit myself foolish for assuming this would be a wet thud knowing I was returning to the Powell Estate. I look forward to catching up on everyone’s reviews (shocked it’s averaged below 4!), and here’s mine:

Also, I attach my listening view for indulgent pleasure.

Can’t wait to see how they follow up on this.
