The Eighth Doctor and Where to Start (topics merged)

So there’s been talk recently as to good starting points for getting into the audio world of Doctor Who. I realize this thread is a bit of a mess (it’s a merging of two or three different topics so in the middle it jumps from June back to February for a bit), but it’s the best we’ve got for a major exploration of the Eighth Doctor in general and his audios in particular. The post above this is a generalized audio timeline.

Made this slide for my dr whomst presentation for a PowerPoint party several years ago and recently updated it and seems like a good place to post it

*based on the TARDISwiki timeline page and simplified as hell since I had a dozen or two other slides to get through lol

It looks amazing! I watched/read/listened to 8th’s stories quite randomly so it’s very helpful to have a flow chart of some sort

Can you upload the slide again with a higher definition tho? I can’t read the texts, it’s all blurry

Just finished the Radio Times comics.
Uhh, well, that was nothing…? A shame, I was so interested in the prospect of an Ice Warrior companion.

The RT comics are so disappointing to be honest.

One does have to wonder what would have happened with that comic strip if it hadn’t been cancelled with hardly any opportunity to wrap up the series in a satisfying manner.

Qe probably would have just got more dull, unengaging strips which will probably get cancelled anyway.

I hope we get another era with new companion set post-Stranded soon.

Agreed. I love Liv and Helen (and haven’t heard the latest box set yet) but I feel it’s time to shake things up and do something new.

I’d love a new arc that stretches several box sets again, that helps give me the momentum to keep listening.

(I don’t want to get rid of Liv and Helen completely, maybe they could go work for UNIT or Torchwood…)

About the EDAs…

I own two in the series (Timeless and The Sleep of Reason), but have yet to read them as I am aware they are part of an arc.

My question is, how do I get into the EDAs? (Oh, and how easy are they to get a hold of?)

Extremely difficult to find physical copies unless you’re willing to scour eBay and shell out serious money. They’re available on the internet archive but idk how much detail I can go into without breaking forum rules regarding piracy etc (feel free to message me on discord tho I have the same username there)

Ooh, jealous! The Sleep of Reason is the one book I don’t have :sob:

It is possible to collect them all but it’ll take a lot of time (I’ve been at it for 5+ years). They’re also much more expensive nowadays that when I began, even the relatively more common ones.

But they’re so good

As @Daximili said, E-books are pretty easy to get hold of. There’re a few people on tumblr (they also have a discord server) doing formatted epub files that are such an improvement on the automatic-PDF-to-epub files floating around

This was my source for the EDAs, God bless them tumblr people. Just a warning: the epubs, at least the ones I have, are not perfect. A lot of paragraphs in the wrong place, some typos, some quotation marks missing, things like that. Nothing that makes it impossible to read, mind, just a bit annoying.

I’m pretty sure most of those mistakes are on the originals, as well.

There are a few Ways you can go about it. Usually, most go from Book 1, which means The Eight Doctors. With the EDAs there are a lot more arc heavy from what I know, so reading it out of order can be tricky at times. Still there are some Standalone Books. I do recommend reading those two Posts here:

I think they are pretty good guides
Personally I think a book like The Crooked World is one I highly recommend, very Standalone and such a lovely Read really!!
I am sure you are probably aware but keep in mind that the EDAs are very different in terms of what they were able to get away with than like the Revived Doctor Books! Just something to keep in mind, I suppose!

Tricky Thing really, they can be very difficult to get physical copies. But then again it depends on the Book really. Stuff like Alien Bodies will cost you a lot, even in poor condition. I do say you will probably be able to find some on Amazon or eBay for a good Price or good Condition, but usually expect at least 10–15 Bucks for each, which is a bit expensive for books this old. Really if you are a Fan of getting a physical Copy it’s worth to give it a shoot, I mean it worked for me, got myself at least 20 EDAs for a good acceptable price. Although maybe wait before you buy more, read at least a couple and see if you like them!
Either way, hope you enjoy your Journey with them, still working my way through them and it’s a blast!

I was quite surprised when I made this new Set that contains all of the Eighth Doctor audios, that only a handful of members have completed everything.

Do you think it’s because Living Legend is there, which is obscure, and also because it contains just so much, which is all very expensive?

I thought there were more Eighth Doctor completionists here!

Well it’s free, so all the Eight Doctor fans should go and listen to it ASAP to get the set completed!
