One of the best moments in life. About to dip my knife into a new jar of marmite :joy:

@monkeyshaver , Words escape me.

What do you do with Marmite? (asked the non-traveled US guy)

Or a different question… what is it ā€œlikeā€? Ketchup? Soy Sauce?

It looks like something I’d like… I think.

You spread it on toast! Or on a crumpet. You can also mix it with peanut butter.

I can’t describe the taste. It has to be experienced.

In the UK we have a saying where you call something ā€˜marmite’ and it means you either love it or hate it, no-one is in-between.

Oh okay, similar to Vegamite I’d bet!

Thanks for explaining!

A similar thing in the US that immediately popped into my head was black licorice.

Most people either love it or hate it. I adore the stuff!

They are similar but apparently not the same (I’ve never tried Vegemite). I found this:

Despite the similarities in the two spreads, Marmite and Vegemite actually taste very different from each other. Whether you like one more than the other is a matter of personal taste. From an objective standpoint, each yeast spread has its own characteristics.

Marmite has a saltiness to it, which balances with a slight sweetness, and has a smooth and silky texture. (Marmite XO has a denser, richer flavor and is darker than the original. Its texture is thicker and stickier.)

Vegemite is salty as well, but also has a bitterness to it. The yeasty flavor comes through, as well as umami (one of the five basic tastes that bring a bit of a meaty flavor to food). Because of its strong flavor, only a small amount is needed. Some might say that Vegemite’s smell is slightly off-putting and the aftertaste is unappealing, but this is not a universal opinion.

As @shauny said, its great on toast & crumpets. Or a very quick sandwich. It goes well with cheese. When I have beans on toast I like to put marmite on the toast.

It’s salty, savoury in a similar area to Soy Sauce I guess but its 100% its own unique thing. I also use it as a cooking ingredient, when I’m making chilli or stews. I think it can add a depth of flavour.

I’ve also tried spaghetti with marmite. Sounds odd but a great quick snack, just melt butter & marmite in a pan then stir through cooked spaghetti.

I’ve tried Vegemite. From memory I think it was just not as strong a flavour as Marmite.

Wow it sounds like something I’d love!

Thanks for the excellent descriptions, I’ve had Vegamite once, and liked it, but Marmite honestly sounds a bit better due to the slight sweetness.

I’ll be on the lookout for some! :cowboy_hat_face:

@monkeyshaver you asked for it: here’s our mac and cheese (with added ham, because we needed to get rid of it).
