TARDIS Guide Advent Calendar 2024

The story was very nice in total, and the jumping between different doctors was nicely done too, keeping the emotional thread going so it didn’t get confusing.

day 4

I think my favourite summer activity is eating ice cream. I also really enjoyed going to the public pool and swimming last summer, I hadn’t been for quite some time before that.

Will read the rest of the story later - the first 2 parts were great fun.

Summary

As for summer time, I think sitting in the garden reading is a favourite of mine. I’m not a sun worshipper at all (burn too easily for that) but a day at the seaside is also fun.

Oh that story was just beautiful

The Horror of Coal Hill - 9/10 (Spoilers)

Everything about this story just works

One is characterised brilliantly, the air of ‘knowing’ that he often has is just done really well, and seeing him at coal hill, before An Unearthly Child could feel off, but I think is just done really well here.

The glimpses we get of other doctors and companions through the framing device are also great, and anything where we get to see more of Sarah Jane is going to be just brilliant. I love the idea of Eleven just popping in from time to time to catch up, leaving a fez for Clyde, it’s just really fun.

Shivani is also beautifully done for a one off companion, especially one that’s in such a short story. The glimpse we get of her past and the parallels made between her and The Doctor, both being immigrants, are just done so so well.

The ending scene is also great, Twelve coming back to catch up with Shivani is lovely, and then with The Master getting alluded to earlier in the story, the realisation that Missy helped them out, leaving a ladder to make sure they’d survive, it’s just done so well and I love it.

As for my favourite summer activity, I’m also not a big fan of summer, but there’s something about just sitting out in the open and having a nice picnic with friends that I can’t help but love.

Yeah, The Horror of Coal Hill is a great short story that I’ve somehow never heard of before! Really strong characterisation of One, great atmosphere, some nice references, an interesting placement on the timeline and a likeable companion in Shivani. I only have minor quibbles about some of the scene changes, so that’s why this ends up being a 9/10 for me.

As for the question, my favourite summer activity is taking a good book and a blanket out to the beach or a park and lay down in the sun and read. It’s calming to listen to all the sounds of people and nature while enjoying the sun and the heat - we don’t get a lot of that up here after all!

Honestly, that was fantastic. Not the most complex story in the world but Collinson managed to nail the distinct voices of all the Doctors (even 12, and I always find him hard to capture in prose).

It’s also got some fantastic action, the short, snappy paragraphs really evoke the sense of motion.

Plus, we have Eleven talking with Sarah Jane, what more could you want?

Question 3

I’m British, my favourite summertime activity is complaining about the heat.

That was a really good story! Sometimes short stories with so many characters can be way too busy, but this one nailed it completely

Day 4 Comments

I thought the short story was pretty good, if maybe a little bit too busy and frenetic for my liking. I enjoyed that it seemed to serve as an emotional reflection for the First Doctor, who sometimes seems to be unappreciated as an emotional source. I think that this story does a better job of exploring the First Doctor’s emerging ethos than Twice Upon a Time, the story it was intended to promote.

Discussion: One of my favorite summertime activities is a good picnic.

I hope everyone has a nice day. I hope that today’s calendar items make it even nicer!

Today’s item is “What I Did on My Christmas Holidays by Sally Sparrow” a Ninth Doctor story that was originally published in the 2006 Doctor Who Annual, and rereleased as an Adventure Calendar item afterwards! (11 pages, but there are pictures!)

There Are so many good Donna moments. She is fantastic. A great one is from turn left when she starts to like the family they are forced to live with. It is so heartbreaking when they leave.

This is clearly my day! I’ve been meaning to read that story for ages and I finally have an execuse to do so!

I’m going to read this on my lunch break!

Oh, and I love my girl Donna - the best companion of the best New Who TARDIS team! My favourite Donna moment is the “I’m not mating with you, space boy!” moment. Cracks me up every time!

I read this two days ago, so this is great!

In my opinion, Blink is much better story-wise but Moffat writes such good prose it’s unbelievable.

Another great find! I think it’s really impressive that Moffat gets the kid voice down so well

Day 5

I’ll have to go with the pantomime in partners in crime. Cracks me up every time

I can’t remember if I’ve read this one or not! I think maybe I did during lockdown. Guess I’ll have to go check it out when I have a moment.

My favorite Donna moment…she has so many terrific comedic moments, and so many of them portray her as an overwhelming personality who’s pretty oblivious to what other people think. Which make it all the more poignant when the fate of the world is put in her hands and she rises to the challenge. So my favorite Donna moment is at the end of Turn Left, when she realizes she can’t reach her earlier self and resolves to effect the necessary outcome in the only way she can. I find that a powerful moment indeed.

It’s been years since I read the original Sally Sparrow story so I may wll give it a re-read.

As for Donna - absolutely the miming through the windows in Partners in Crime (note miming - not pantomime, but I won’t get on my hobby horse about pantomime in Doctor Who…)

But also, echoing @kevinwho’s comment - the part at the end of Journey’s End where the Doctor has to wipe her memory and she goes back to being ‘old’ Donna. Tate’s ability to switch back to the Runaway Bride Donna just shows how much Donna grows as a character. And her fear and heartbreak when she knows what the Doctor is about to do is palpable.

A fun little short story, I love seeing the seeds of the idea that would become Blink, but how everything surrounding those ideas is so completely different.

Moffat is great at writing prose, and nails that childlike voice here like others have said.

As for my favourite Donna moment, god, there’s so many to pick from.

Going for one other people haven’t mentioned yet though, I love the “Too Salty” scene from Unicorn and the Wasp. The episode itself is a bit meh but Tate and Tennant’s chemistry just makes it so much fun to rewatch
