Are there any Doctor Who episode/story titles that you think would work just as well for a different story? Are there any titles you think would’ve been better for another story? Curious to know everyone’s thoughts. (And although this is posted in the TV category, why not open it up to audio and book titles too!)
I actually think The Curse of Peladon and The Monster of Peladon might be better suited to their opposite story. The first story involves a lot more Aggedor, the ‘monster’ and also plays on the Doctor’s preconceptions of a classic monster in the Ice Warriors. The second one is more based around the ‘ghost’ of Aggedor and how the planet has been affected - or could we say ‘cursed’ - by the presence of the Federation.
Death to the Daleks should quite obviously be called City of Death
Face the Raven, Heaven Sent, and Hell Bent should be Trap Street, parts 1, 2, and 3
World Enough and Time, The Doctor Falls, and Twice Upon a Time should be Twice Upon a Time, parts 1, 2, and 3
The EDA Option Lock should be called Star Wars
The Knight, The Fool, and The Dead should swap titles with All Flesh is Grass
Face the Raven could have been called The Curse of Fatal Death…
Can I replace “The Woman Who Lived” with the title of a Red Dwarf episode? Namely “Me2”?
The Underwater Menance and Fury From the Deep might as well have swapped titles with the number of times I’ve called one by the other’s name
I suspect there are others, likewise with The Seeds of Death and The Seeds of Doom.

complete sentence for forum things
“Invasion of the Dinosaurs” is great as a title, but I prefer the original and more subtle title “Timescoop”
I kinda also like the simple “Invasion” Title from Episode 1 but can see why they didn’t do it considering we already had a Story named The Invasion, but a great Way to hide that Twist at the Time, I imagine!
Ït also has a lot of references to Adric and Luvic dying, in a way, what if the kid who looks like peter davison being told “remember 82”, and Clara asking Ashildr if cybermen show mercy while theyre both looking at a corpse played by Robin Soans.
Maybe the title could also be one, “Ghosts of the -ic Boys” - I also like the titles “§” And “adventures in Luvic-sitting”. The first because its so short AND a weird symbol, but im not sure if FtR/Clara Trilogy is the best story for it, or if the best story for it even aired already.
“Adventures in Luvic-Sitting” is a tKoT prequel set around the time of the flashback, AKA the time Kassia brought flowers to the Melkur for the first time, AKA Earth Year 1959. Tremas and Lucina are 27, Kassia and Neman 18, Seron 33, Katura 38, Zorca (The Fifth consular ring holder at the time) 41, and Luvic 8. Its called that bc id have luvic interact with belinda or w/ever the comp would be.
And kinda could be named aris, this way it would be the short est name of classic who stories, and yes its aris that its named after. Not Karuna. Though that or “Deva Loka” (bidmead style) could also work.
Or maybe all of S18 could share the planet names. So we have a season made up of titles: “Argolis” “Tigella” “Alzarius” “Vampire Planet” “Gateway” “Traken” “Logopolis” theyre unique enough that you don’t really need anything else. Fit in with the concept of being the season of alien planets.
Or snakedance being named manussa… time and the rani being named Lakertya, timelash being named karfel, web planet being named vortis. Et al.
Kings demons being named persuasion bc enlightenment.
Or maybe, the trilogies could have the same title overall and become 12parters.
tKoT/L/C = New Beginnings parts 1-12
FC/SoD/WsG = E-Space parts 1-12
MU/T/E = Black Guardian parts 1-12
Or at least they should share the same naming schemes across a trilogy.
“Full Circle” “State of Decay” and “Warrior’s Gate” are the same naming scheme already.
Then it should be either “Traken”, “Logopolis” and “Castrovalva” OR “The Keeper of Traken”, “The Monitor of Logopolis” and “The Portreeve of Castrovalva”
Then it should be either:
“Mawdryn Undead” “Vanirs Enslaved” “Wrack Eternal”
“Brendon Public School” “Terminus” “Buccaneer”
“Crystal” “Hydromel” “Enlightenment”
The Next Doctor was a wonderful title for the time and context, but it would’ve been fun if RTD had gone with The Two Doctors.
Most RTD finale titles are quite interchangeable.
The Parting of the Ways could be attributed to the finales of Series 1, 2, 3 and 4.
Doomsday could work for the end of Series 1, 2, 3, 4 and The End of Time.
Last of the Time Lords could work for Series 1, 3 and The End of Time.
Journey’s End could fit for the end of Series 1, 3, 4, and The End of Time.
Empire of Death could almost work for the finale of Series 1.
Now you said it… I really can’t put the plot to their respective titles
Yeah I always have to think for a second before I mix up The Parting of the Ways and Journey’s End, they are so generic.
- Bad Wolf / The Parting of the Ways
- Army of Ghosts / The Parting of the Ways Again
- The Sound of Drums / The Other Parting of the Ways
- The Stolen Earth / The Parting of the Many Ways
- The End of Time / The Parting of the Ways Redux
Just going to suggest that:
The Day of the Doctor
The Night of the Doctor
The Time of the Doctor
The Name of the Doctor
The Power of the Doctor
Are all names that are pretty generic and could easily have been swapped around…
You’re not wrong!
Thankfully Moffat resisted “The Dawn of the Doctor” for Capaldi’s debut, otherwise we would’ve been trapped in that title format forever
If the shortest title is § then it would be fun if the same season had the longest title: Doctor Who and the White Whispers of Arak Tarrant’s Babylonia
