Summertime Stories

I recall Steven Moffat describing “Robots of Sherwood” as the summeriest story (or words to that effect) which got me wondering which other stories have that summertime vibe?

I put forward, from the classic era:

“The Android Invasion”
All sunshine and ginger pop. Not the greatest story in the world but it is fun. I am reminded of my own childood in the 70s, those long summer days!

And from RTD1:

“The Unicorn and the Wasp”
Brght, breezy fun fun fun fun fun, the wonderful thing about Tiggers is… (Tennant is SO Tigger at times). Again, sunshine and just an all round fun story.

What other stories remind people of the summertime and why?

Delta and the Bannermen - holiday camps, rock and roll, picnics, honey bees.

Why am I not surprised? :stuck_out_tongue:
Mind you, an excellent pick. I see that, yes! That summer heat fits well with Goronwy and his bees.

It was clearly summertime the episode before Delta and the Bannermen, too, as Mel just wanted to go to the top of Paradise Towers and relax by the pool…

The Dæmons springs to mind for me, it’s got that warm feeling I think

My first thought was orphan 55, with the spa. And honestly the whole climate change thing fits too…

Good point. Perhaps because it’s studio bound, I’ve never really seen “Paradise Towers” as summery.

Something very British summertime about those beach scenes. It doesn’t look that warm! Plus, the beach was so quiet. Perhaps it was a parallel timeline? :stuck_out_tongue:

Absolutely! Yes, very much so. The whole setting really plays into that as well. A true sùmmertime story. May Day, so lste spring/early summer but it works for me!

Planet of Fire is technically a summertime story, for the earth part of it. Peri needs to go back to college in fall, three months from now…

Yes, that one also fits the bill. Summer holidays never go smoothly for the Doctor!

For me, a lot of the McCoy era has a Summertime feel - largely because quite a few of them were filmed at the height of Summer!

Delta and the Bannermen and Paradise Towers have already been mentioned but I’d also add in Greatest Show, Survival and Silver Nemesis. Silver Nemesis really shouldn’t feel Summery given that it’s meant to take place in November. I blame climate change (see The Runaway Bride for another example).

You make a really good point about “Silver Nemesis”. I definitely get that summertime vibe despite the apparent November setting.

Following the McCoy trend, “Survival” definitely fits. You can really feel that summer heat, both in Perivale and on the planet of the cheetah people.

That’s honestly a good Question, I honestly do struggle seeing a lot of Stories as ‘Summertime’ ones, a lot of Who strikes me as something more winter-y (Ribbos) or autumm-y (Curse of Peladon), that said I think one could argue the original Sea Devils Story might fit in that Category. Obvisiously you got some Scenes where the Sea Devils come out of the Water to back that Point up!

Outside of it, for the Revival, hmm.. maybe the Ghost Monument? Lots of warm Colors and its Story is about getting to the TARDIS first, something which I imagine has a certain touch of summer to it, I guess? (I am not making my Points clear, am I? :sob:)

Agree with the response above about Planet of Fire. I’d also add Year of the Pig, The Two Doctors, Piscon Paradox, The Doctor’s Coat, River of Death, The Gift, Palace of the Red Sun, Shell Shock, Graham Dilley, A Town Called Eternity The Ruins of Heaven, Gone Fishing, DW and the Pirates

Did you ask me this because you knew I read it as a first doctor fan? :P /lh

But I suppose one could make a Point for it, most Stories with a Sea Monster or the Sea as a centric Setting can often be attributed as a Summer-esque one, in my mind. That said, I don’t necessarily recommend anybody reading those since most of those Comics aren’t too great

Yeah, I’m surprised how poorly rated all those projector comics are lol. Better or worse than AARGH?
