Story Variations - how best to handle these?

Hello!

Bumping this very old thread with a new question about variations.

Where we are now:
Variations of stories exist, for example for The Underwater Menace there is the original, an audio soundtrack, and an animated reconstruction.

If you complete one of these, then for the purposes of the Badges and Character Tracker, it’s as good as completing the original.

However, I’ve found some issues with this from using it, and an issue that will crop up in the future:

Let’s say I’ve never seen The Underwater Menace, so it shows as ‘Unwatched’ in my list. So I buy a copy of the Animated Reconstruction and watch it, and rate it.

The original will still show as ‘incomplete’ because I’ve only completed the animated version. If I mark it as complete, just to get it out the way, my stats will be off, as it will assume I’ve watched 2 copies of this now!

The same goes for when I add all the audiobooks, if I rate an audiobook version of The Ruby’s Curse then the non-audiobook version will remain incomplete. But if I mark it as completed as well, then my stats show I’ve done way more reading than I actually have.

A potential solution

I’m thinking that when you marks something that has variations, if you complete a variation (and not the original) then it should automatically Skip the original. That way, you don’t have to manually go in and skip it, and if you want to watch it as well, you can unskip it.

Does that sound like a good plan? Any other ideas? I thought about having another option like “Completed as another variation” but that’s just getting complicated.

The only potential issue with this is that the “skipped count” is supposed to show you how many people aren’t interested in this story, but if it includes anyone who has seen it in another format then that muddies the water.

Please let me know your thoughts
