The only Classic Story I’ve ever watched on a higher speed was Invasion of the Dinosaurs. And I only sped up some of the dinosaur bits. Even the production team has said that they would’ve changed it if they could. Those scenes where dinosaurs fight each other are so painfully slow that speeding those up make it a bit more watchable.
Well I certainly kicked a hornets nest haha
For me this is the first time I’ve ever speed something up that I’ve consumed. I don’t do it with YouTube, Music, Audio Dramas or Audio Books.
As someone who is an older person, and enjoys older media like B&W noir films etc, I think there is something to be said about consuming something as the original artist intended. But as someone who has written and directed stage plays, and also has editing experience, there is something to be said about rising and falling ‘plot’ in early DW. My experience with early DW is that you can probably cut at least 5 minutes from most episodes of ‘fluff’. This can be repeated shots down a hall way, shots lingering too long, actors talking very slow etc. While it may be blasphemy to speed up DW to 1.2, it does help minimise these things.
While some poeple have called out the TikTok, instant gratification nature this may resemble to some, I think this way just minimises the very long lows. And it works a treat on recons where you have a static image for a lot of the show.
If this was a case of trying to get through the series quicker just to get to the good stuff I would have just told my partner the story in half an hour and started at Pertwee. My partner has enjoyed the last few serials we have watched at 1.2 and they are more into it with the minimised lul.
Also I’m only advicating this for myself/my partner and just thought of it as an interesting topic for the forum.
Peace and Love to all.
I was just talking about personal preference, not trying to press my “old and grumpy” ways on anyone
(I am not that old, but I have three sons that tell me I am old several times a day )
Oh absolutely, please don’t take my reply as any sort of personal affront. If it works for you guys then all is good. I do actually get it for the recons because some of those can be painful! I just think you may miss some of the nuances of old Who but then I come from a generation who watched Doctor Who on omnibus VHS with the credits edited out and was fine with that (till they released things uncut) so who am I to talk.
There are all sorts of ‘arguments’ on the internet about how ‘faifhful’ or accurate the animations should be and I actually have no issues with the creative decisions that have been made on those that upset quite a few people so, in a way, I’m probably being a bit hypocritical to judge the way you have chosen to watch early Who!
I mean, I’m only 48 and I’m behaving like I fought in the war and think they should bring back National Service to build character!
I’m only a few years younger
Well then - you should know better!
I am old (53) and occasionally grumpy, but I’ve learned to be relaxed about this. When DWM tried the new and improved Time Team I saw Cristel Dee said that she mainly watched Classic Who at 1.5x speed. I thought “Sacrilege!” (well, actually I remember laughing out loud to it). I was amused that a younger attention span couldn’t cope with such leaden stuff as Resurrection of the Daleks. OK, maybe not that one. But come lockdown and when I joined #TARDISclub, a watchalong marathon from the start with other fans on Mastodon, inevitably I was late to start one or two episodes. Suddenly 1.5x speed enabled me to catch up! Now I still wouldn’t habitually use it unless I absolutely had to, but it’s not unbearable. I still prefer to watch episodes as God intended, but I’m happy for others to enjoy Doctor Who in whatever way they like. Some sixties stories can seem to drag, especially those that lack the visuals, so I can fully appreciate the desire to make them more palatable by tweaking playback speed.
Thankfully people here are so accepting of different viewpoints that it feels like a safe space where we can discuss our various viewing foibles without fear of suffering a pile on!
I love that episode. The dinosaur design is not good but I like the story.
Oh yeah, the story’s rather clever. It’s just that the effects really drag it down.
I watched this recently and I thought that the dinosaurs really weren’t that bad. I mean, they’re obviously puppets of course and never going to convince 100%, but they have charm and the model work is nice. It compares well to The Goodies Kitten Kong episode which is of a similar vintage.
The effects are not cutting edge, but they do serve to tell the story and it is the last Malcolm Hulke story, which is a bit of a shame. I like Hulke’s stories.
