RTD 2 hype and appreciation topic

How far has your rewatch come?

Iā€™ve complained a good deal about this new era of the show, and I still stand by a lot of that, itā€™s nowhere near my favorite era of the show, but since this is an appreciation thread, letā€™s think about some of the things I do like.

Ncuti Gatwa - I think heā€™s very entertaining as the Doctor. Heā€™s very fun, very stylish, and I think he and Gibson play off each other well, and he works well with other characters too. There have been plenty of moments where I just like his performance, even if itā€™s in an episode Iā€™m not as much of a fan of.

The Look - This whole era so far has been continuing on from where the Chibnall era went with the new aspect ratio and the way they shoot it, and the past few years has been some of the best Doctor Who has ever looked on screen. Theyā€™ve got a bit more budget, from various things like moving to Bad Wolf, whoā€™s owned by Sony, the Disney deal, and smaller seasons, and I think it shows.

The new TARDIS console room - Wow. Just the perfect blend of elements from the Classic series and the modern one, just think itā€™s absolutely beautiful. Really like what they can do with the lighting with the RGB roundels too. Of the modern series, second only to Capaldiā€™s. I know some have complained about the lack of furniture and stuff around the TARDIS, but I donā€™t think it needs it.

Wild Blue Yonder, Boom, and Rogue are all some truly great episodes of Doctor Who, and the trailers (even if itā€™s their job to do so) have made the upcoming season look very promising. Iā€™m looking forward to Series 15 more than I did before Series 14, excited to see where it goes.

Iā€™m only up to The Giggle next, itā€™s a slow rewatch lol (went from Power of the Doctor onwards).

I am thinking of starting on Sunday and watching one a day. That should mean I am done in perfect time. But now I might start on Saturday with Power.

Iā€™m also planning a rewatch of S1 before the new season!

Haha we donā€™t really need a TV Club for it, as all the threads already exist, just add to them!

I think this Era so far has some stellar Leads, both Ncuti, Millie and very probably Varada (sheā€™s amazing in Andor for example) are all some great Leads for the Show.

Also, some Direction is pretty great, Highlights in that regard would be easily the ones from 73 Yards and Dot & Bubble.
Oh, and Wild Blue Yonder was such a great two-hander.
There are probably a lot of other Things to praise, but I have to sit on that.

I am excited for this new Series, granted this Era hasnā€™t been my favorite, but all the new Writers make me excited to see what they got in store (and gives me more Hope that RTD had enough Time to focus on his own Scripts, Lux please be good :crossed_fingers: ). Oh, and Berlinda seems to be a delight, a Companion who wants to get home? Sign me up!!

I will stay hopeful, hopefully this Series converts me into a RTD2 Super Fan but weā€™ll see!

Boom, Dot and Bubble, and especially 73 Yards and Wild Blue Yonder are some of my favourite TV Who stories in years, I absolutely love them

I donā€™t know why but I rarely get the urge to rewatch the most recent Doctor Who ahead of a new season.

But Iā€™m still really excited for the new season. I was squeeing a bit earlier and my eldest asked if I was ā€˜10 years oldā€™ā€¦ :upside_down_face:

I am shielding myself from learning pretty much anything about the next season, but Season One was an absolute delight.

I loved how every episode felt long - enough time to really dig into certain characters and situations. Each story feels like it is almost a movie. That often resulted in feeling like a meaningful journey I could really dig into and get absorbed by.

Thereā€™s also a lovely side to these episodes where, while Iā€™m not personally that big a fan of Boom and Rogue, I know lots of people are. Itā€™s not hard to see why, either. They have a lot to offer I just didnā€™t quite connect with them as much as others.

On the other hand, Dot and Bubble, 73 Yards, and Joy to the World have all really sat well with me. I love those episodes even if I know they arenā€™t everyoneā€™s cup of tea.

My point being that I feel each and every episode has a lot of good qualities to it that has a lot to offer all sorts of viewers.

Itā€™s just too bad the finale and premiere are a little lacking. It definitely clouds my opinion of an otherwise excellent season of television.

Iā€™m doing this too. Iā€™ve not really looked at anything in the ā€˜spoileryā€™ thread.

Started my RTD 2 rewatch with Star Beast today. I really like this story and have watched this episode many times. I love how 14 and Donna meet and the confusion with Rose. One of the coolest aspects of the episode is how Sylvia has evolved since we last saw her. She still feels like the same character but has matured. The conversation between Donna and Sylvia in the kitchen about Rose is one of the best scenes that RTD has written; it is a masterclass in how to talk about trans questions to a broader audience. The solution is not that good, but I like almost every other moment of the episode.

You donā€™t always have to compare something to something you donā€™t like when saying you enjoy it, but yeah, glad you also had fun with the episode!

Itā€™s so good, and itā€™s extremely realistic as well, some people, especially older people struggle with adapting to queer society, but the fact that sheā€™s double checking that sheā€™s doing it right and doesnā€™t want to make mistakes shows how much she loves her family, and how much sheā€™s grown from her frankly toxic former self.

While there are some lines in Star Beast that are a bit cringe, Iā€™ll never stop saying how I appreciate RTD attempting to normalise queer people and humour in Doctor Who, even if his jokes sometimes fall flat.
