Radios Times Top 30 Classic Who Stories Tournament

I love Earthshock (even if it kills Adric :sob: ) and I’m lukewarm on Pyramids, so that’s an easy decision.

Controversially, I’m not fond of The Aztecs - it’s good, but as far as pure historicals go, I much prefer The Romans and The Reign of Terror.
Meanwhile, I think The Tenth Planet is great

These four choices are actually somewhat sensible. An iconic story with the Fourth Doctor and Sarah Jane against the return of the Cybermen and the death of a companion; a seminal historical against the debut of the Cybermen and the death of a Doctor, giving way to the first regeneration.

I’m refraining from looking at the full list of candidates just yet to preserve some element of surprise when each match-up comes through, but, from what I can glean seeing other participants’ conversations, some of these candidates are perplexing to say the least.

It’s by a narrow margin on both matches, but I chose ‘Pyramids of Mars’ and ‘The Aztecs’!

I’ve only rated classic Who through Vengence of Varos (so no 7th Doctor will skew things). But I was currious as I also really like Stones of Blood and hallariously when I sort classic Who by my rankings its #31. Although at 4/5 stars its tying a lot (and if we toss out Shada as Radio Times probably does it is #30).

30 stories is almost 20% of classic Who which is probably more than most would expect. Still while there are some picks I disagree with its largely a sensable list to me. Or maybe Im just used to not liking beloved stories

Earthshock and The Aztecs

Pyramids of Mars easily defeats Earthshock, 19-10, and The Aztecs easily defeats The Tenth Planet by almost the same margin, 18-10. This time that matches the RT ranking, but not the TG ranking, which had them both very close.

Well my Daleks Master Plan review is still the most intensely Ive ever written against a story. So this one’s an easy choice.

Actually I just checked and ignoring the Celestial Toymaker animation TDMP is my 4th lowest rated Classic Who story.

It seems I’m going with the crowd on one, and against it on the other. The Time Meddler, and Web of Fear.

I have a lot of time for DMP, it is an epic story and the recebt recoveries just have cemented its greatness in my mind. But I love The Web of Fear. It is one of my all time favourites and I have rewatched it so many times. So I had to go for that one.

Surprised to see so few people go for Tomb of the Cybermen

Trickier and trickier… ‘The Time Meddler’ is such a formative story and one of the four incredible finales for the 1960s, introducing the Monk, fleshing out some lore and giving us more questions at the same time, and serving as the first outing for Steven, a personal favourite companion. Butterworth is hilarious yet still quite dramatically compelling, and the plan of the titular foe involving such an important but often overlooked setting is another point in its favour. Unfortunately, if it comes down to personal preference, I’ve gone with ‘The Tomb of the Cybermen’. Victoria’s first adventure and, in my opinion, the strongest season opener of the decade; another strong Cyberman story so soon after their debut and ‘The Moonbase’; a subtle but pronounced horror through the Telosian design, the barren setting, and the trope of unearthing an ancient evil… It was close, but I made my choice.

As for the other option? That was probably harder. I don’t feel too strongly about either ‘The Daleks’ Master Plan’ or ‘The Web of Fear’, but, while I love the latter and mostly prefer it to ‘The Abominable Snowmen’, the former wins out just because of how unique it is. The only twelve-part serial, heralding the return of the Monk and the Daleks; the first on-screen demise of a companion twice-over; a bleak but apt ending that – if ‘The Giggle’ is anything to go by – scarred the Doctor for over a dozen lifetimes. ‘The Daleks’ Master Plan’ wins out here, but, again, it was very close!

I don’t really like either Tomb or Web, so easy decisions for me here

I like Tomb (and have no time for the naysayers on that one  ) but I adore The Time Meddler.

I don’t particularly like DMP or Web but I find Web very repetitive, the Yeti about as scary as a hamster (with a blunt pen knife) and the central mystery as to who the traitor is poorly played out… so DMP gets the vote.

Saw this without context and thought you were talking about the Web Planet at first. The shock almost gave me a heart attack.

I agree I never was a huge fan of web of fear … I think it would do better if it followed the atmosphere of the serial… Be smaller more claustrophobic and shorter

As much as I’d love to vote for The Time Meddler, I just love The Tomb of the Cybermen. It’s a real classic of the B&W era for me, and one of my favourite serials of all time.

The Daleks’ Master Plan is an easy one for me. Yes it’s too long, and meanders quite a bit, but I really enjoy the variety. The Web of Fear is good, but I can’t vote for both.

The Time Meddler crushes The Tomb of the Cyberman by a 2-1 margin, 20-10, and The Daleks’ Master Plan does the same over The Web of Fear, 19-9.

This one doesn’t feel fair. ‘An Unearthly Child’ and ‘Terror of the Autons’ are great stories in their own right, both offering a new lease on life for the programme before settling into their respective eras, but ‘The Evil of the Daleks’ and ‘The War Games’ are two of the most satisfying, explosive, and well-constructed finales in the show’s entire history, let alone the 1960s. The fact that both are in the Second Doctor’s era, too!

Wow this one was hard! All four are great stories. One of them is of course so important to the show, but the two Troughton stories here are the highlights. The last part of Evil is one of the best half hours of the show, and the whole spectacle of The War Games is phenomenal.

The War Games was an easy choice, and I went for TEofD coz I’ve never really seen the hype around Terror of the Autons

An Unearthly Child falls to The War Games, 22-5, while Terror of the Autons fights valiantly, but also falls to The Evil of the Daleks, 14-12.
