I like this idea on paper, but isn’t it going to be a bit confusing if different users have different lists? Like which order am I going to follow for the “best” experience?
“best” experience is going to be subjective and different for each person. You might choose to follow the list of someone you tend to agree with on stuff. You might look at multiple lists and see where they differ and why and what they’re trying to do (an efficient and bare bones approach vs a more complete but longer list, for instance) and make your decision from there. It’s a slightly more involved process with no single objectively correct answer, but that’s because I don’t think there is one
My main logic here is that I think any playlist designed by a single person is going to be more reasoned and coherent than a collection of stories voted on by a bunch of community members with differing opinions
Also tying each story to a list means we don’t have to do a prereq poll on every individual story
Prereqs are probably most effective, in my opinion when they’re pared down to the absolute total essentials - for instance, to watch, idk, Heaven Sent, you probably need most of series 9, but things like Time Lord episodes or other Twelve episodes enhance the experience but aren’t totally necessary for comprehension.
And especially when you bring the EU in, and dealing with a series as extensive as DW, it can quickly become confusing and intimidating if there’s a long list of ‘prequisites’
To be fair might be good to have 3 tiers: Required, Suggested, Enhancements(? not sure on the name)
Using Hell bent as an example:
Required:
- The Girl Who Died
- The Woman Who Lived
- Face the Raven
- Heaven Sent
Suggested:
- Rest of Series 9
Enhancements:
- Day of the Doctor
- Listen
- Name of the Doctor
This is my favourite idea at the moment
