Once Upon a Time Lord -- A 60th Anniversary / 14th Doctor thread

Great to read this (I haven’t yet picked up today’s issue), Big Finish doing Fourteen would only be slightly less interesting to me than Big Finish doing Sixteen, because it would be another way of continuing on from where the show left off, in effect. Exploring that incarnation and all the ways he’s been affected by his experiences as Eleven, Twelve and Thirteen, and maybe isn’t so much like Ten as he appears, would be really exciting, more so than doing more with Ten IMO (I think Ten is an incarnation who’s pretty well-examined at this point, although that doesn’t mean there isn’t more that can be done with him in the hands of clever writers). I hope it happens eventually!

I agree. I’d be up for Tennant reprising his role as the 14th Doctor, for reasons you mentioned. (Plus on a very surface level note, it’d probably just be easier than Tennant having to try and put the younger squeakier voice on!)

My own hunch, based on guesswork, is that they originally “limited” the appearances of 14 (comic strip, charity skit, 3 episodes) so he wouldn’t overshadow Ncuti and the incoming era. But now that’s done and dusted, and 14’s future would most likely lie with Big Finish anyway, I think any such ‘unwritten rule’ could be brushed away if someone came up with some fun story ideas that’d suit 14. If it meant they could also do more with characters like Rose Noble too, I’m even more open to it.

I await “Time and the Tray Bakes” by Nicholas Briggs, featuring the 14th Doctor and an older Mel Bush being whisked away for a boxset.

I’ve said time and again that, if we were to get more of the Fourteenth Doctor in a performed capacity, I would love it if he reunited with Yaz. I’m curious to see how different their dynamic would be; the Tenth Doctor was quite oblivious to the nuances of human connection when he offered Joan the chance to travel with him in ‘The Family of Blood’, but I imagine that the Fourteenth Doctor, having lived longer and experienced a bit more, might be a tad more aware. Still, it’d certainly be interesting! Yaz only ever knew the Doctor as Jodie Whittaker, so imagine her surprise when a six-foot lanky bloke with spiky hair rocks up at her front door claiming to be the same person…

Depending on just who ends up joining the “companion support group” she might recognise 14 as being similar to 10, of course. Could well be interesting to have Yaz be vaguely aware of what the other incarnations are like…
