November Prompt Month: Bingo!

Oh i never saw this

Ok I made a card, but I don’t know if I’ll actually get anything done since school is eating up a lot of my time rn

Oh boy, thanks for the reminder to generate a card :grimacing: my creativity has been sadly dormant of late, but I’ll see what I can do!

How are you all personalizing the titles on your cards? I don’t see an edit option.

This looks so fun but I didn’t get it until now ahhh. Might finally take the chance to write about doctor who for once! Even if it falls outside the prompt month

It’s only if you make it yourself instead of generating it

Editing burst hit last week and I finished like 6 different fics that I had in progress but then I had to travel and lost the momentum so we’ll see if I get any back in time to get some done for this.

Just generated my card, very intrigued about some of the prompts I got.

And like always, absolutely no forward planning, I’m going into this with a google doc and prayer.

I’ve generated a card as well, but I’m not sure if I’ll actually take part or not. I’ve never written any fanfiction before, but these challenges always look fun. If I do take part I’ll just be winging it, so we’ll see what happens…

My first piece this month. The book’s on hold while I do this challenge.

01/11/2025 First Alien Encounter

Brian Williams enjoyed working in his potting shed. He liked planting up seed trays, ready for his tomato crop that would come later in the year. It always seemed magical that such huge vines could grow out of the tiny seeds that he planted. Later, he’d have the delicate job of pricking out the fragile little seedlings into pots in the greenhouse and still later those strong plants would be transferred to his raised beds. Gardening kept Brian grounded and he loved to get his hands into the soil.

This morning he’d carefully filled a seed tray with sterile compost, so that only things he’d planted would come up. With his reading glasses on, he poured some of the seed into one of his hands. He then licked the tip of a pencil and used the moistness to pick up one of the tiny seeds. This he deposited into a small hole in the compost. He repeated the action until his seed was evenly distributed across the damp compost in the tray. He was about to pick the tray up to transfer it to his greenhouse, when he heard a tiny little squeak. It was coming from the corner of the bench in his potting shed, an area where there wasn’t that much light.

Brian put the seed tray down and pocketed his reading glasses. He peered into the corner. Could there be a mouse in his shed? He hoped not. He didn’t want to sort out a humane trap and then go to the business of releasing it more than half a mile away. There was a little movement, but it was slower than that of a mouse. He flicked the light on in the shed.

“eep!” said a tiny little voice.

Sat in the corner of his bench was a small, grey being with its hand shading its face against the light that came from sole lightbulb that hung in Brian’s shed. It cowered slightly at the sight of Brian.

“It’s OK, little guy. I won’t hurt you.” Brian reached out a finger to it. After a moment, the being took it in its little hand. Brian was quite entranced by it. He’d had many encounters with nature over the years and he loved to see frongs, toads, lizards and birds in his garden. But he’d never seen a creature like this before. It was no larger than a tennis ball. It appeared to be bipedal and had two arms with hands, one of which was holding Brian’s finger. Atop its little body sat a head that was out of proportion, about four times larger than the body. It blinked.

“Hello Brian Williams,” it said. “Forgive me, but I’ve just scanned your brain to absorb your language. Thank you for letting me touch you.”

Brian didn’t hold much with being surprised by things. He tended to just accept them as they came. Otherwise he’d question all the times that Rory disappeared with Amy. Wherever they went, it wasn’t Brian’s business unless they chose to tell him. So, a strange little grey man who knew his name wasn’t the kind of thing that would ruffle his feathers.

“Hello, little man,” said Brian. “Might I know your name, please?”

The alien released Brian’s finger. “I am Merthyll of the Drotlling Braat. You may call me Merth.”

“What are you doing in my potting shed, Merth?”

“It was a slight teleportation error. I had been aiming for your son’s room.”

“What would you want with Rory? He’s a nurse. Are you injured in some way?”

Merth coughed. “No. I was hoping to hitch a ride in his backpack. For the next time he goes somewhere with the Doctor.”

“Which doctor? There are lots at the hospital where he works.”

Merth sat and thought. “That makes things tricky. I had hoped that there’d only be one. I’m on a mission, you see. I don’t want to fail”

“One thing I’ve learnt over many years of gardening,” said Brian, “is that failure is just deferred success. It may be a set back, but you can always try again.”

Merth looked up “You’re right. One moment, please.” He touched a watch like device on his wrist. “Did you get that guys? We need to try again!” He turned back to Brian. “Thank you, Brian Williams. I enjoyed our brief little chat. I’m going to leave now, but we may well meet again.”

With that, Merth touched a control on his bracelet and vanished. Brian shrugged and went to put his seed tray in the greenhouse.

I like that it’s about Rory’s dad. It’s a nice and cute little story.

I was going to gun for getting a story out on the first but unfortunately it doesn’t seem like that’s happening.

Some other stuff has come up and I’ve suddenly become swamped with various other projects so I don’t know how many prompts I’m going to be able to complete this month.

I suppose I’ll just have to see when I get a spare hour here or there.
