Tangentially related, I dug this out for anyone interested. A blog post about how what we now refer to as “seasons” came to be, in classic Who.
The piece begins with NuWho, and the oddities like Christmas specials, and then delves into the old show. Sharing cos I find this kind of stuff interesting, and someone else here might do too.
There is similar, ambiguity over how we arrange the older show. Sorry, the older older show. Or rather there should be. But we are, seemingly, all long agreed that there are twenty six “seasons” of twentieth century Doctor Who. That was certainly the consensus before the old show ended in 1989, and it’s the consensus now. Sufficiently so that there’s not been so much of a whiff of disagreement with the Blu-ray “collection” of the series being arranged in twenty six sets. Everyone knows what will be in each set, even though they’re coming out in a numerically random order.
When though, did this consensus emerge? Is it just because a series that ran for 26 years, one week and six days having 26 seasons instinctively make sense? Well, not quite. If you look at the much hallowed Radio Times 10th Anniversary Special, that organises the Doctor Who transmitted up to that point in terms of calendar years, with the terms “series” and “season” nowhere to be seen. But by the end of the show’s 1980s run, producer John Nathan-Turner was himself using the term “Season 24” to describe the programmes he was making for 1987. What happened in-between?

When people tell me that there are 95 missing episodes, I always tell them they are wrong.
There are 101 missing episodes.
Because The Web Planet is missing in its entirety. It shouldn’t even be considered a story. Because it doesn’t exist.

There is some multi-part weirdness with the way this site does audios. Notably, Hooklight is listed as 2 stories (because it released in 2 volumes) despite clearly being all 1 story (Dark Gallifrey has similar issues). 2-parters in the 8th Doctor boxsets are handled inconsistently, and whether a War Doctor Rises set is counted as 1 story or 3 is based on guesswork done before the story comes out

The recent Destination: Daleks is also treated as two seperate entities, even though they are two parts of a whole, in hindsight.

Yes as you say the main problem is guesswork because they don’t release the info early enough.
As for the inconsistencies, I will fix them one day…

Yes they are two parts of a whole but one is live action the other is a comic… there’s no way to make them one story on the site!

I also wish you could rate individual episodes of classic serials, but I know that’d be way too convoluted and messy.

So the only reason why I use StoryGraph as my primary doctor who log is because of the “currently reading” feature.
Like I can keep an eye on what part of audiobooks I’m up to and such.
But if TARDIS Guide gets that, I’ll be leaving StoryGraph in the dust!

My solution for this is that the site isn’t tracking my entire consumption of Doctor Who, just what I’ve been doing since I joined.[1] So despite the fact that I’d watched through the entirety of NewWho and Hartnell before that, those watches aren’t logged. So when it comes to historical re-watches, I just do it as I’m going along, and the site ends up being accurate for my DW consumption post-joining.
