At least it looks scarier than the Abzorbaloff…
He also looks scarier then Swarm
Loving Omega’s facelift…
All I’m going to say on this sort of thing is that, really - in an age where all these streamers and online video platforms and OnDemand versions of TV channel now exist - you’d think that the matter of being ‘outdated’ wouldn’t rely upon whether the show is monumentally massive and prominent in all areas of the culture & landscape.
Almost all of us here, if not all, are older than the existence of iPlayer at least. Things have changed, but I think part of that really should be towards an acceptance of the idea that Doctor Who doesn’t need to ‘catch on’. We live in a world now where people get specific-niche hour-long video documentaries on YouTube, for goodness sake. Things aren’t about needing to be the top dog, drawing in tens of millions of people.
What the real question is regarding TV shows like this these days is actually: where is the world economically, and what will ultimately be the best way to produce the who within that economic landscape? It’s not 2005. The recession happened after that. It’s not 2015. COVID’s since dented the economy and the risks that commercial entities undertake. It’s 2025.
All sorts of shows are, if you’re paying attention to anything leaning towards what counts as industry news, getting green-lit but then being stuck at the funding stage. That’s the real tricky thing that Doctor Who needs to contend with. No matter how many episodes it gets out a year, or what the driving influences are behind the look and style of a given series of it, economic realities are actually what we need to see it stay floating above.
Also I will say to TSJ’s remarks as an aside that though I agree that something like Severence is a bad comparison point: I don’t think the BBC, or Disney+ as the current co-producers, consider Who to be a children’s show. It’s a family show to them, I’d say. And that’s arguably rather a different kettle of fish.
Outdated?
Not a chance.
One of the few shows they can keep reviving itself by changing the lead and the supporting cast.
The show still feels fresh and exciting to me every time we get a new episode or season
