There were rumors swirling around about a Martha Jones spinoff a while ago, and I was super bummed when they turned out not to be true. I’ve been thinking about what it would have been like, and I’m wondering if anyone else has thoughts? Ideally I would’ve liked to see her relationship with Mickey get fleshed out since imo it came literally out of nowhere (whatever happened to Tom?) as well as some explanation for why the two of them went freelance. I think it would’ve been cool either for Martha to get called back to UNIT or for her and Mickey to form their own little team similar to Torchwood. I think seeing her and Kate interact would’ve been neat.
In conclusion, I miss Martha Jones and I’m still salty she was the only RTD era companion not mentioned in the 60th. Also I feel like her and Mickey are the “pair the spares” couple of all time and I’m still kind of salty about that too.
Pretty sure that even if it was true (never ever believe Doctor Who rumours, myself, until I see actual announcements) there’s very little chance of Noel Clarke being involved.
To be fair, the Toymaker was acting out all the terrible things that happened to the Doctor’s companions and Martha was just brushed aside a bit, she didn’t die or anything.
But to answer your question:
I enjoyed when she was briefly in Torchwood, and would have loved it if she was in Children of Earth too (she was replaced because the actress got a job in Law & Order).
So personally a Martha spin-off would have to be Torchwood-related, perhaps she started her own branch which wasn’t as badly run as Torchwood 3
Martha working as a space doctor. It would be a procedural show and every week we would have her trying to help aliens (and humans too, why not) with different diseases and so that she just never heard about before while working in a space hospital.
Probably a weird spin off that would be cancelled after one season, but just my jam.
They never put the word space in front of something just because everything’s all sort of hi-tech and future-y. It’s never space restaurant or space champagne or space, you know, hat. It’s just restaurant, champagne or hat.
Not sure how a Martha Spin off would look like honestly, however while the Idea of fleshing out her relationship with Mickey would be interesting, I really don’t want to see it (and that’s not even including the whole Deal with Clarkson, which I won’t get here into). I always found this pairing like one of the worst Things in RTD1, it felt like an attempt to give closure to two Characters, where RTD has no Idea what to do to them. Of course, I can’t say for certain, but it feels so pointless for both Characters and just a bit random, if that makes sense.
Either way, I would be interested in seeing her return eventually, especially since she is like the one NuWho Companion, who very well could unlikely many of the others. A Spin-Off would be an fascinating Way to do it, do the Idea that @NobodyNo-One has! And give him the Position of Showrunner too while you are at it!
Yeah it was proven untrue fairly quickly after the rumors started (and I definitely didn’t get my hopes up), but the concept has been bouncing around in my brain for several months.
I haven’t heard about the whole Deal With Clarkson but it doesn’t sound great. Hard agree, I really really didn’t like Mickey and Martha as a couple, but in this imaginary world where RTD would bring her back I don’t think he’d back down on his original decision about it. I guess if we’re talking about absolute ideal scenario it’s not really a thing. It felt like a huge disservice to Martha’s character to end her story with a big time skip where she just randomly quit her job, ditched her fiance, and started running around with Mickey (who I don’t think she’d ever directly spoken to on camera). What was her character motivation for going freelance? Why did she leave the stable relationship she’d built, especially since RTD went out of the way to talk about Tom in season 4? Why is she running around carrying a giant gun? I know she did some more intense stuff with Torchwood, but to me Martha is a doctor through and through, and the idea that she completely ditched that aspect of her job sort of killed me.
That’s fair, I’d recommend searching it up for yourself (if you want to learn more about it, that is). I am not gonna in detail or mention it here, as it’s quite a sensitive subject and one which can cause a lot of discomfort, so I’d like to avoid that.
But yeah overall agree, can’t say much about her in Torchwood, as I haven’t seen Torchwood beyond its second Series. I do however think this pairing just feels random and at worst almost as if RTD needed to give some closure to characters, which already got that basically. I think Martha is excellent, but it rubs me the wrong way that we leave on such a baffling note with her.
I know Freema’s done a handful of things for Big Finish, so I’m just waiting for a Tenth Doctor Adventures boxset with Ten and Martha. We’ve already had one with Rose and two with Donna, now we need one with Martha.
