Hypothetical Doctor Who 5-Season Breakdown

Yeah, that’s fine. I vaguely remembered there was some of that done before, but couldn’t remember where. I also wanted a separate thread for mine.

I’m thinking of expanding on this soon. Maybe more detail, maybe an extra season. Might move things around a bit. Definitely break the season down into more pure data. In essence, play around with it.

That’s very exciting! Looking forward to it!

I want to break down returning aliens (I only want one appearance for the big ones), locations, new vs returning aliens/monsters, maybe add another season, maybe add a few holiday specials, etc, etc.

So I counted it up and each season is ten stories except the last season which is only nine (because of the three-part instead of two-part finale). If I add a sixth season with this Doctor, I’d simply push the epic three-part finale to the end of Season 6 and insert ten more stories in between.

I have two Peladon stories (S2 & S4), and feature as returning aliens/monsters (in one story each as currently outlined) Cybermen (S2), Daleks (S3), Ice Warriors (S3), The Monk (S3), Sontarans/Rutans (S4), and Silurians (S5). I’d like to add some more returning aliens/monsters in here somewhere (maybe if I included a sixth season). I’d definitely want to bring back the Draconians and maybe feature the return of the Voord, Wirrn and Krynoids. But on the other hand, I don’t want to delve into the nostalgia-fest that beinging back old favorites could become. I want to keep creating new monsters too. (Classic Doctors, New Monsters needs something new periodically to keep going.) More thoughts to come eventually.

I’ve also gone through and discovered that each of the five seasons has a pure historical while there are only three psuedo-historicals (S1, S3, S5).

I’ve already started rough ideas for a Season 6, the main idea being to add a second companion (to travel alongside the American male) and have that companion be from somewhere in history. Whether that Season 6 opener would be a pure historical or psuedo-historical, I haven’t decided. Or the location whichever side of the historical coin it lands on.

Decided a Mongol woman would make an interesting companion for season 6 and decided on a pseudo-historical as her opening story.

Here’s the updated end of Season 5 and new Season 6:

Season 5: Episode 11 - Alien world. New monster.

Season 5: Episode 12/13 - Modern Earth. San Francisco. New Monster.

Season 6: Episode 1 - Keep American companion, add new companion (bringing current total to two). New companion is a twenty-something mongol woman. Pseudo-historical.

Season 6: Episode 2 - Modern Earth. New Monster.

Season 6: Episode 3/4 - Alien World. Voord.

Season 6: Episode 5 - Alien World. New Monster.

Season 6: Episode 6 - Pure Historical: Somewhere in British History

Season 6: Episode 7 - Alien World.

Season 6: Episode 8/9 - Future Earth. Krynoids.

Season 6: Episode 10 - Alien World. New Monster.

Season 6: Episode 11/12/13 - Modern-day Earth. UNIT, the previous companions, Silurians (they’re the good guys here and working with UNIT), time experiments, dinosaurs. Doctor saves the day, but feedback from shutting down time experiments causes regeneration. Make a three-parter to be epic regeneration story as well as to stretch the budget. General plot is kind of a cross between Invasion of the Dinosaurs and the TV show Primeval.

I’m still not entirely sure. Part of me is thinking a white male, maybe in the mold of Capaldi or Hugh Laurie’s House. But part of me is also thinking younger male or female in their 30s/40s. As far as personality, if the Doctor is older I’d want a cross between Capaldi and House. If younger, I’d want a warmer personality, but not as bouncy and ADHD as the Thirteenth Doctor. All that said, I want to leave it as open-ended as possible so that the right actor can be cast.

I’m also torn between putting more detail into the episode breakdowns and leaving them as vague as possible in order to give the writers as much creative freedom as possible. I might leave things vague but add little character notes for things I’d want covered in the story.

I’m toying with the idea of holiday episodes between seasons, but that would mean that the aftermath of the companion death in the S2 finale would be in a special. I’m debating whether it should be the focus of the S3 premier or be in a holiday special (not necessarily on Christmas though).

After watching Stubagful’s newest video (Is Doctor Who Outdated?), I’m considering majorly reworking my breakdown, which is currently sitting at six seasons. I like some of the ideas I’ve brought into this, but one of the things that was brought up is that serialization is fairly prevelant in modern streaming shows. So I might play with that some. That said, I’d love to get some discussion on the above mentioned post.

So I’ve been revamping my hypothetical 6-season run, adding more detail in places. I’m torning between planning all the stories in detail and leaving mostly wiggle room for potential writers. I’m also torn between trying to have a true ongoing arc (similar to say Arrow that I recently binged) or keep the general looser style of Doctor Who.

Hypothetical Doctor Who 6-Season Breakdown

Season 1

New Cast

Companion #1: Oscar Campbell. Irish Father, mid-40s to mid-50s in age, single (wife died), has twenty-something daughter he’s still close with.
Main: S1-2 | Recurring: S3-4 | Guest: S5-S6

Companion #2: Ciara Campbell. Irish woman, early 20s, still close with father (might even still live at home), maybe a career/maybe still in university.
Main: S1-2 (Dies in Season 2 finale)

Episodes/Stories

Season 1: Episode 1 - This episode introduces a new Doctor, new companions and is set on present-day earth. The new companions are an Irish single father and his twenty-something daughter from Kildare. The new Doctor arrives in Kildare to explore and just see the area, having been ages since he’s visited Ireland. While wandering around, he runs into the daughter companion who tells him of mysterious goings-on that started a week earlier after a storm. The Doctor investigates and discovers that a small spaceship crashed in the storm and the mysterious happenings have been the result of the pilot attempting to repair the vessel. Along the way, the daughter’s father gets involved. The Doctor helps repair the vessel and the alien leaves, after which he invites the father and daughter to travel with him.

Season 1: Episode 2/3 - We’re jumping right into a two-part story right off the bat. This one I’m setting in a future alien world (probably the Garazone Bazaar because it’s got so much potential). No real threat, more of just experiencing aliens and culture shock. Primary conflict: one of the companions gets separated from Doctor and other companion and has to be rescued/find a way back to TARDIS. I’m actually thinking of having Oscar be the one to get into trouble as a nice subversion of the norms. I’m making this a two-parter in order to let the world breathe and to spread the cost of the sets, costumes, makeup and CGI. Also, I’d make as many of the aliens as possible be/use practical effects. (Use Pakhars as one of the species the TARDIS crew interacts with.)

Season 1: Episode 4 - Pure historical! Show that the past is just as alien as space/the future. Use a non-European historical topic to educate/explore. (I’m thinking of having the writer pick between Ancient China, the Abbasid Caliphate in Baghdad, or Mughal India.)

Season 1: Episode 5 - Our first return to “home” (keep it within County Kildare in order to keep the threat small-scale). Possibly bring in a returning monster, but not a really major one, something more small-scale.

Season 1: Episode 6 - Jungle planet with sentient plant people. Maybe an environmental message, but make it fairly subtle and work hard to make it feel natural within the story. The story must come first, message second.

Season 1: Episode 7/8 - Pseudo-historical two-parter. First part is exploring the world, maybe with brief hints of alien threat. Second part is defeating alien threat. Possibly make a new monster, possible have a returning b-, c- or d-list threat. Set this one somewhere in British history.

Season 1: Episode 9 - Return to “home”. Low-key threat.

Season 1: Episode 10 - This one is another alien world. I’m thinking making it a “quarry” planet (that is, filmed in quarries giving it an almost Classic Series feel) with ancient ruins and dangerous artifacts. I envision this as a sort of Indiana Jones meets Tomb Raider kind of feel with some of the aesthetics of Tomb of the Cybermen (but without actual cybermen). The villains are treasure hunters, or someone else hunting the macguffin, and can be human, alien or a mix thereof. Doctor stops macguffin from being activated on the planet, but the macguffin disappears (will become important next season).

Season 1: Episode 11 - Space station. Possibly a Doctor-lite episode to let the companions shine more.

Season 1: Episode 12/13 - Return to “home” where a new technology is taking off. The Doctor knows it shouldn’t exist. New alien that has introduced it and is using it for some scheme. First part is discovering the purpose of the tech and slow build to villain reveal. Second part is defeating the villain and companions deciding to continue traveling with the Doctor.

So this “Season 1” posted above has been somewhat expand. I’ve fleshed out the companions a bit and added some details. Some things are still being left vague because I want give potential writers as much freedom as possible. An updated “Season 2” will be coming eventually.
