How did you begin listening to Big Finish?

I think the vinyl is really good, its the only one I own so I can’t say for all of them, the cover quality is good, and the vinyls themselves are nice, I honestly don’t know alot about DemonMusic Group xP

After finishing Torchwood in four days I was desperate for more content but was very wary of starting to collect audios due to the cost, especially knowing I struggle with processing audio. But I checked out the BBC ones and had a great time so I bought Broken and Serenity. I think it was August? Last year.

It’s kind of mad how may people started listening because of torchwood rather than because of Doctor Who

There’s so much Doctor Who you can watch if you want more, but a limited amount of Torchwood - especially considering half of them die in the middle of the show, so if you want more of your favourite characters you have to go EU.

It’s also because if you were into New Who but not classic, then Big Finish got the Torchwood license before they did anything with the Tenth or Ninth Doctor, so it makes sense that it was the first one to try.

I started with The Eighth Doctor Adventures. I had just seen the movie for the first time and i got very curious with how he truly is and with the high praise of his audio adventures and having seen every live-action content i needed more. His adventures filled me tremendously so i just kept going and it has been the time of my life, so many wonderful stories, so many magnificents character, i fell in love with all of it all over again.

It was lockdown, 2020 - Big finish out out a few freebies and i was instantly hooked! I can’t actually remember my first, but I’m 90% sure it was No Place Like Home:) then I snagged The Diary of River Song 1, and I never looked back

I listened to the BBC7 broadcasts of the Paul McGann episodes back in the day & enjoyed them, but bought a handful of the early Main Range ones and was disappointed in them (I now know that the particular ones I got are regarded as some of the weakest ones, so no wonder!) Since I was short of funds at the time, that, as they say, was that.

Until after the pandemic when I started to get panic attacks when driving on motorways after not having done so for so long. I was desperate for a distraction & discovered that you could now get nearly all of BF on download, which I could play in my car by plugging in my phone and using the app.

I’ve not looked back since and am loving all the new stories.

Well, I’ve only listened to a few so far, but I started with River Song! After I finished her part in the series I just really wanted more of the character and somehow stumbled upon the Diary of River Song series. It seemed relatively easy to get into, with the stories being more stand-alone, most of the other stuff felt pretty confusing. I have five of that so far and I’ve really enjoyed them, I’ll continue once I’ve got the money/they’re on sale again. I’d really like to get into some more series there too, I’ve listened to some of the free excerpts but for now I’m limited by time, money and that I don’t really know most classic doctor’s yet (I want to watch them on TV first).

If it helps, BF is still confusing even to old fans - they provide shockingly little help for what context you need and even when you know, there’s always more!

But anyone here who’s in too deep would be happy to offer suggestions for context if there was a series you were interested in but not sure how to start with!

I’ve heard of Big Finish for a while but never got around to it until 2021 or 2022. I was watching the beginning of a video about the War Master: Only The Good boxset and decided to purchase it. I loved it. I currently only have 3 right now since they’re expensive but I love the ones I currently have.

As I often say, check with your local library and inquire about both adding some Big Finish to the collection and-or utilizing any Inter-Library Loan program they may have in place.

In 2000, the TV movie had come and gone and Doctor who seemed to have been finished as a tv series. I’d got married moved house, then I was in MVC and saw the Sirens of time on cassette tape so bought it, and started subcribing from the Marian Conspiracy

I was first introduced to Big Finish through The Mutant Phase, which came free with Doctor Who Adventures. I didn’t listen to any more for a while until The Beginning piqued my interest, and now I love their releases.

I was already interested in Big Finish because I had begun to hear about it around 2019 or very early 2020 (and I’m shocked I never heard of them way sooner! So integral to the fan experience for me now I feel) but I didnt take the plunge until they made the first episode of The War Doctor (“The Innocent”) available for free in September 2020. I proceeded to spend an embarassing amount of money.

Though before all that I did listen to the fan audio “Exhausted Supplies” to see if audio was a format I could get behind and I loved it! It’s a multi Doctor story featuring the 9th and 12th Doctors and assured me that audio drama is a brilliant medium.

The War Doctor is one of my favourite Big Finish ranges personally. John Hurt is so good in those audios.

I learned about it in 2021, I heard about Eighth Doctor audios, but then I digged a little deeper and began with The Sirens of Time.

After that I did a little of the montly range occasionally doing the Eighth Doctor audios

I’ve been a lifelong fan since I was born basically. My dad owns a lot of 8 Doctor Audios so I always knew about Big Finish but it never interested me initially.

In 2018 I remember seeing Big Finish advertise The Law Machines Torchwood One boxset. The whole concept of exploring torchwood one was an idea I loved. I had only seen DW and SJA atp, but I did really want to delve into just how evil TW1 was but couldn’t justify spending money on it.

In 2019, all those jokes in the main show about Jack Harkness’ sexuality I finally understood on a rewatch. It all went over my head as a kid, and I found out that I hadn’t even watched Torchwood. Finished Torchwood season 3 and had no incentive to watch season 4. Because of ahem, reasons.

Then I hear about The Lost Files and House of The Dead. These are BBC audios but I loved them, and then the Torchwood fandom hyped up Broken. As this was 2019, Serenity was also being advertised on Big Finish’s socials.

So for my 15th birthday I asked for a tonne of Ianto Jones audios lol. Built up my collection over the past 5 years, and my favorite stories are Torchwood One stories. Apart from Soho and The Continuation, I’m pretty much up-to-date.
And my dad discovered just how much I hyped up Big Finish Torchwood One and now he’s lending me his 8th Doctor audios. I started with Lucie Miller and now I’m onto Dark Eyes. I enjoy them but they hardly reach the peak that is Torchwood, no offense.

When I see people say they didn’t know about Big Finish, I also assume they didn’t/don’t read Doctor Who Magazine because its often criticised for being a bit of an advert for them.
