I’m considering Weapons Grade Snake Oil [1] as the on-ramp – the author, Blair Bidmead, generally keeps a brisk pace, has eminently fun ideas, paints a good picture, and in my experience has no issues writing women (a relevant concern for a few of the books, oop).
All I know about it is that it features colossal sapient animal mechs with their minds bonded to a human, and that the main character is implied to be a bit part from The Sarah Jane Adventures.
(I considered The Brakespeare Voyage and Head of State, but they’re fairly heavy in different regards – the former has a significant density of prose, as Simon Bucher-Jones is wont to write, and the latter is a bit stomach-turning at times; I figure the best starting point is a breezy and accessible one…!)
What do y’all think? @turlough? @glass_shard?
