Filter improvements [now live]

You can filter by rating to get specifically half star/one star etc. ratings to get around that but that’s a good point.

Maybe Im misunderstanding, but it sounds like you mean the “not raited” filter under “raitings”. I use it all the time for stories Ive completed but not raited

@mellis903 is talking about the Randomiser here.

Yes, that doesn’t exist on the randomiser filters:

But you have confirmed that it does on the main search and, in so doing, have confirmed that I’m being wonderfully unhelpful by requesting totally irrelevant things to what shauny actually asked for!

This might be slightly out of the realm of story filters but could we have filters like has image for characters, or denyied / pending for your suggested edits?

There is already an image filter for characters. With you on being able to filter your own suggested edits, especially if it includes a way to view approved/denied ‘other suggestion’ edits (sometimes I get a notification one of those has been approved and I have absolutely no idea what it was…).

So I’ve been wondering about this for a while and figured this was probably the best place to ask:

I sometimes want to get a list of all the stories that I own OR are available for free, so that I decided what to read/watch/listen to next. Is there a way of doing this currently? If not, would this be made possible with the upcoming filter improvements.

That’s a good idea - I’ll add it to the “Owned” section of the Personal Filters - it also raises a question about the “Available for free” filter.

Currently it includes things that are on Spotify, but if you are in the UK then everything that is on iPlayer should be in there.

I might do this, but also have a setting for people to say whether or not they have access to iPlayer, and then that can toggle whether something is free or not.

This is now LIVE for Patrons only at the moment - across TARDIS Guide, AudioLog and TrekLog.

I need to write up some documentation but have a play! The highlights are:

  • Everything should be faster - filtering, sorting, and searching[1].
  • Added Advanced Mode for filtering - so you can mix multiple rules together. For example, using the Characters filter you could combine several conditions to find stories Featuring the Ninth or Tenth Doctor, plus Rose, but excluding Captain Jack. This is not just for characters, it works across all filters. Some great ideas are possible!
  • Choose and re-order filters directly on the page - you don’t have to hop back into settings and reload just to add a filter. It’s all saved to your current browser, or save it as default for it to apply everywhere.
  • Different filters per page - you can show different filters for Stories as you do for Collectables and Quotes, etc.
  • It remembers open and closed filters so ones you like to keep around ‘just in case I need it’ but don’t want to take up screen space, you can keep closed.
  • When closed, filters still show a summary of what is selected inside them.
  • New “Non-instant filtering”. This is often requested - turn off Instant Filtering and you can now take your time, click several filters, not have to wait for loading screens, then click “Filter” and it only loads once. Default, but optional, for mobile. Available for desktop too.
  • Undo option - if your last selected filter didn’t do what you wanted, there is a quick way to undo the last selection you made.
  • Floating controls - pagination, undo, and results float at the bottom (on desktop) to make it easier to use
  • Less jumping around - selecting a filter can sometimes make the whole filter list expand or contract, which used to jump the screen around and disorientate you. That has been reduced.
  • Better, faster dropdowns - The dropdowns (like “character selector”) load faster, and show the selected items right at the top for easy access.
  • “None” option - For some filters like Doctor, Companion, Villain… there is a new “none” option! Also supports filters like Publisher, so Curators can easily find things that need fixing.
  • Location Filter is back in a big way - Browse locations, drill down, search - it’s really cool, try it.
  • Unknown value filtering for dates, pages, runtime… - find stories where we don’t know the exact value. Maybe you can help us fix it?
  • Owned Filter - this has now been added to Stories
  • “Owned or Free” filter - Find stories you own, or are freely available. This could be your next story!
  • “Any Rating” option - quickly narrow stories down to ones you’ve rated, no matter the rating (the inverse of “unrated”)
  • Better page titles and sharing previews - the Title tag (shown in your browser tabs) now updates so it’s clearer which filtered list is which, and sharing a link to it works better - it has a title and description, and Patrons can share links with non-Patrons.

Phew!

This is turned on for Patrons only at the moment, please have a look and give me any feedback or changes, any bugs you notice.

  1. searching is only slightly faster but hey, a win is a win ↩︎

Having a play around and thought of something (probably not possible and not a huge deal but)

I’ve filtered for Ninth Doctor and Rose (only) stories that I haven’t completed (as I’m still trying to complete all of them).

Is it possible to exclude variations from the list e.g. the audiobook versions of the novelisations? If I exclude audiobooks it might exclude original audiobooks.

Yes there is a filter called Originality, just select “Original” to see all original stories only

Ah yes it wasn’t one I’d added to my filter list - but with this new ‘do it directly from the page’ function, my filter worries were washed away.

That line sounds like taken directly from a shopping channel sales script

Having this happen since the change, not all the time so can’t pin down exact cause. Its when I try to open any tabs or stories etc. On Chrome
