One of my friends liked “The Fires of Pompeii” so much that he started binging NuWho (he’s currently on series 3) after I showed it to him! It was one of me and my brother’s favorites growing up, and we both took Latin after watching it!

I actually think Episode 2s have a tendency to be somewhat middle of the road, I find most of the episodes above either bland or downright terrible.
But I’d have to go for Day of the Moon for my favourite, a big, bombastic finale in the opener with a wonderful period setting, some genuinely fantastic horror and one of the Doctor’s smartest plans.

Fires of Pompeii is what relaxed my mind about Catherine Tate, I was so worried she was just going to be a comedy sidekick with no depth but my god she stole the show in that episode!
Also I have a soft spot for The End of the World as it was my first second episode. If that makes sense

Looking at this List, I must admit the second Episode Slot never does much for me, or at least not that much.
That said my Top Choices here are easily Fires of Pompeii and War of the Sontarans, which I am pleased to see at the Top!
Big Love to Day of the Moon as well (seriously, that Series 6 Opener Two-Parter is sooo good) and Beast Below. And hey, I like Smile, very enjoyable.
The Rest I don’t feel really strongly about (not saying they are bad, just most of them are kinda just okay for me).

The End of the World
Imho not the best, but still my favorite second episode. Back then, more by chance than anything else, I bought a DVD box set of Doctor Who Season 1. I had never watched Doctor Who before.
The first episode, “Rose,” I found interesting, but it didn’t fully grab me. Nowadays, with so many series premiering on streaming, I might have stopped watching. But alas, I had the box set, so I watched the second episode as well—and it was that episode, with its hinted larger narrative and tragic backstory of the doctor, that hooked me. It made me watch not only New Who but also all the classic serials.
I wouldn’t be a Who fan without it, so that’s why it’s my favorite second episode.

Impossible Astronaut / Day of the Moon is probably my most rewatched story by far, so might have a bit of bias in my choice. Fires of Pompeii and Beast Below are great as well!

For now, at least, it didn’t. But I’d argue it’s very close with some of the best second Episodes (which is not saying too much, considering most second Episodes doesn’t do that much for me).
