Easy Call: Barbara, Vicki, Sara (bonus one is Katarina, while she is by no means properly fleshed out any Story that I know with her is pretty good and her status is one that brings some mystery around her, I don’t really know I just like her). 1 had a strong roaster of Companions, almost all of them could be somebody’s number 1, and I totally would get why. (Okay not sure with Gillian and John Who, then again they might be better with 1, maybe…?)

This has ended up ordered pretty much the way I expected with Barbara at the top. I kinda thought that the placement of Katarina and Dodo would’ve been switched. And as expected, but a little disappointed, no love for John and Gillian.

Another one that I want to highlight is the “favorite companion” polls. Each mainline Doctor got one (War and Fugitive didn’t because they didn’t really have companions, and Fifteen doesn’t have one because his run isn’t over yet). If you haven’t voted in any of these yet, go for it. And remember that you can vote for as many as you want.
The breakdown is mostly what I expected, with some variance in the middle. The current order from most favorite to least favorite is: Barbara, Ian, Vicki, Steven, Polly, Sara, Susan, Ben, Katarina, Dodo, Oliver Harper (from a Companion Chronicle trilogy from Big Finish), and finally, with no votes, John and Gillian (from the TV Comic strips). I think the biggest surprises for me is that Susan isn’t higher, and Katarina is ahead of Dodo.

I think Susan might be lower because, although she started strong, writers increasingly wrote her as a complaining child who tripped up a lot. She even tripped in The Five Doctors! I can’t speak for expectations back then but now we want women to be as empowered as men, even if they are younger.

Funny thing is there’s a reasonable number of these polls where I might be inclined to vote differently if I voted again, as I’ve watched a fair number of 1st & 2nd Doctor episodes since. (Namely, I’ve now caught up and watched all of classic…)
I’ve seen a lot more of Vicki since I voted in this one.
