Imo he’s the only revival showrunner to have done consistently good finales, has the era that’s most in the spirit of Classic Who, and also the only one to have consistently captured what I love about Doctor Who, in emphasis and storytelling style and pacing.
(He’s also much too centrist and a lot less progressive than he thinks he is—but I get the vibe RTD and Moffat have even bigger gaps between how progressive they think/say they are, and how progressive they actually are, and they’re both much more obnoxious about that and in general imo, so there’s that lmao)
Comments like these are single handedly carrying my excitement for when i get to watching the Chibnall era. They are like antivirus for all the reddit and Youtube comments i keep reading
Yeah you don’t want to listen to that.
Jodie Whittaker is great as the Doctor and there are a lot of good stories in my opinion (and also The Battle of Ridiculous Name av Most Filler Episode in The World Kolos)
Parts of fandom lost their collective shit over the Chibnall era and managed to blind themselves to the fact it was no different to any other era in the grand scheme of things. There are shonky episodes, good episodes and brilliant episodes. Whitaker is as much the Doctor as any other incarnation and criticims that she was ‘Tennant-lite’ are simply not true.
Sadly most of the discource over the era got obfuscated (I use that word a lot I know, it’s a cool word) by the ‘female Doctor’ debate with too many accusations of misogny thrown at people who didn’t chime with the era which made a lot of people double down on their dislike.
I fully believe that with the benefit of hindsight and with less ‘riding’ on the era, a lot more fans will find stuff to enjoy. It happened with the JNT era which was torn to shreds by fandom at the time, especially the latter years.
And the cycle is repeating again because RTD was seen as the saviour of the show after Chibnall’s run and look at the (sadly, predictable) backlash he is getting.
Always, always, always ignore the ‘consensus’ (which is never real anyway) and judge for yourself.
If there is always one thing that is true about DW, it’s that the previous era was the Greatest Ever and the current era Sucks So Bad. this happens every time. DW fans are so predictable
Depends on the circles I guess lol, I’ve never personally been around people with that mindset, and (while I don’t think you mean it like this) it feels a little insulting and patronizing to hear people say that everyone always loves the last era and hate the current one
Everybody I personally know is pretty consistent with what they enjoy and what they don’t in the show, they reevaluate some things and not others as time goes on because that’s how opinions work
I don’t know how to do the quote thing people keep doing but
“Always, always, always ignore the ‘consensus’ (which is never real anyway) and judge for yourself.”
is basically my mantra. It’s so much more fun to discover how you feel about stories and characters personally than to just assume whatever you heard from another fan or a group of fans is objectively true
It’s a generalisation but it has proved broadly true since the show returned. Moffat’s announcement as the next showrunner was greeted with a great deal of excitement because his episodes under RTD were so celebrated. It didn’t take long for his tenure to be pulled apart. Chibnall maybe wasn’t greeted with the same enthusiasm but there was a lot of excitement for the first female Doctor. We all know how that turned out. And then RTD’s return was hailed as the show being returned to it’s glory days and it took about a week before he was being pilloried.
Ah, that’s fair, I see that being a general thing. I think it particularly bothers me because I loved the Chibnall era while it was going on and preferred it to RTD’s and Moffat’s first runs, so hearing that generalization invoked makes me feel like I’m being dismissed and invalidated for preferring it over RTD’s second era now
Oh it’s absolutely a general thing and directed more at those fans who never seem to be happy with what’s in front of them and seem to just hate-watch. No one round these parts thankfully.
I’ve said before around here that I’ve generally not liked the second half of Moffat and all of Chibnall. There are elements of both that have merit for me, but mostly it’s just bad.
But if anyone bullies someone for liking those eras, I’ll definitely defend their right to like stuff that I don’t. Those are the worst kinds of “”“fans”“”".
I just really enjoyed it! Thought the vibe was really cool and fresh for Who, love the mythological feel of the Ux and the planet, the visuals are great, I’ve always thought Tzim-Sha was a cool and intimidating villain but he was even more so here (I love the dramatic shots of him in this episode so much) and I found his defeat and fate quite satisfying, and it also harked back to The Pirate Planet which is a favorite Classic story of mine. Plus I had no prior emotional investment in Mark Addy as an actor so I didn’t care how much his character got to do lol.
And those are just reasons why I like it as an episode, I like it even more as a finale because it does away with all the incredibly frustrating finale/arc tropes of the previous two showrunners, just focusing on telling its own story instead of being a massive[ly unsatisfying] “wait I gotta cram everything into this even if it cheapens all the elements and doesn’t make sense” episode.
There are some “big” revival finales that I like, but I will always be clamoring for a return to a more Classic style where there’s no pressure for a story to be anything other than a good story on its own.
Happy to help! It’s not for everybody (which is true for every era) and it’s not flawless (which is also true for every era), but it’s certainly not the Objective Trash Fire That’s Agreed To Be Such By Literally Everyone that many people seem to think it is. I like it a lot.
My ideal scenario is that it’s just accepted as an era among all others and no one’s considered weird or bad for liking it, which I think is coming eventually, just like it did for Colin Baker’s era.
I really respect that. It would be nice to not have to have arcs all the time, just our heroes having a good time travelling. I’ve been meaning to do a Jodie era rewatch so I look forward to watching the episode again with that in mind
