Cool. Its a great story. I do expect fandom on places like this to want to go back. But the general new audience? Especially where a big villain is introduced with no context. Do those new fans have time to go back & do the homework?
& of course RTD claimed it was all new no background knowledge required! RTD1 era was so much better at brining back classic elements. I do get the feeling though all the returning stuff now makes it seem that RTD thinks, even subconsciously, that the shows best days are behind it.
Yeah exactly. Bringing back elements from the past can work, when itās done well. And bringing back/name dropping a whole bunch in a short space of time and not giving them the time to breathe and stand on their own aināt it. The autons, daleks, cybermen, master, even beep the meep worked, because they were the main focus of their respective episodes and that gave the audience time to get to know them even if they werenāt familiar.
Whereas now itās just Yet Another name drop amongst the numerous other plots going on, so they literally have to exposition dump to get the audience up to speed (and no, lampshading it doesnāt make it any better)
Iām really surprised by the mixed reaction to this episode. I thought it was fantastic and easily the best Rani episode so far. Loved the WandaVision vibes of it; my favourite of the season.
Even my parents were mixed. My Dad said āI donāt know why they have to make it so confusingā after we finished watching. I donāt get it though; I thought it was such a strong start to the series finale.
Literally⦠between that and adding Lethbridge back to her name and making UNIT less science focused again I really am worried for the spin-off. Us lesbian Kate truthers can still dream ig
My parents had a similar reaction. They didnāt get how the Doctor and Belinda were now on earth in the fake reality, they didnāt understand the explanation for how it came to be, and were very confused by the Rani and Omega.
I really enjoyed it too, but I think the combination of bring back old characters that werenāt well explained, and the sudden switch to this wish world reality from the TARDIS made it hard to understand for some people, especially casual fans, which I think is sad
Wlw relationships in Doctor Who feels overlooked I mean of course we had Madam Vastra&Jenny , Bill&Heather , Thasmin but something still feels off I donāt know how to explain it Iām sorry if that doesnāt make any sense
Itāll be interesting to see if RTD mops up how bigeneration works next week. I could imagine Mrs Flood being killed, and dying. Dead, no regeneration. Meanwhile the Rani goes on. Therefore implying thatās also how it worked for 14/15, and tying that up.
Although thereās part of me who could see RTD being chaotic and showing Mrs Flood regenerating as he manically chuckles to himself.
Conversely, Iād love if the episode ends with everyone dead, the Earth a pile of rubble, the UNIT tower collapsed, everythingās a complete mess⦠then the TARDIS materialises and out steps Tennant. āWhat the hell did I miss?ā Cut to credits.
