Episode Discussion: The Reality War

I saw on Instagram that the actress who played Anita was pregnant when she played her in the episode. I think that this explains why she had a maternal roll in this.

He says after reading 2316 comments of some random fans…

(Just kidding—I’m more of the reading type myself, but I just couldn’t help myself.)

Well indeed, but that’s lots of different voices with lots of different opinions.

I agree 2.5 hours is excessive but to their subscribers they’re not a random fan, they’re someone they’re invested in enough to want to listen to them for that long.

Take with a pinch of salt. A rumoured OG Season 2 ending...

In the original version of the ending, Susan would have shown up during the party scene that the Doctor and the others were attending. She would have been wearing a grey trench coat, similar to her look in The Five Doctors special.

But the real twist was that she wouldn’t be alone. She was going to be standing beside Poppy.

Then, just before the credits rolled, Susan would turn to Poppy and say, “Let’s go, Mum.” That line would have revealed something big about their connection and set up a major storyline for the next season.

The plan was to explore this new story in Season 3, but that changed when the future of the show shifted. Season 3 wasn’t going to happen as originally planned, and showrunner Russell T Davies decided it was better to wrap up the Poppy storyline instead of leaving it hanging for another Doctor to deal with later.

I don’t like that!!! Yes we get Susan but also I really didn’t want Poppy to be her mum or her daughter or any relation to her…

I had heard about the party ending, the accidentally revealed shot of 15 & Belinda dancing. Vlinx was going to be the DJ & we pull back to see Susan watching. But the addition of Poppy? Stop trying to make Poppy a thing RTD!

I think that it is impossible to judge a short summary like that. It might have worked, and it might not have, but I think that all good episodes could sound bad, and all bad episodes could sound good if you only have a few bullet points to go off.

Oh, that sounds like it would’ve been god awful.

A final party scene like its an early 2000s Dreamworks movie and whatever the hell is going on with Susan.

So with or without rewrites, I guess I was just destined to not like this episode.

If only we’d had 15 regenerating at a party, with all of the UNIT lot caught up in the blast. Ah well.

Andrew Evans, we hate you for leaking everything but as you seem to have full access to RTD can you please leak the cut scenes! I want to know!

(And I don’t believe Susan would say “let’s go, Mum” to a toddler that would just be ridiculous. But I did say that to every single leak that was right didn’t I…)

Well…

This is actually a youtuber I often watch reactions from. One of the reasons I like him in particular is that a lot of reactors react to the episode while watching and then that’s that, but with him, after the episode, he’ll start talking about his thoughts on the episode and the things he noticed and themes and so on, and often he’s insightful or has interesting things to say. The extra length is kinda the bits I’m here for!

This one, mind you, is particularly long. When he watched “The Greatest Show In the Galaxy”, his video was 75 minutes.

(The fact that he’s both reacting to Doctor Who and has a long series where he’s watching and reacting to Buffy the Vampire Slayer doesn’t hurt…)

I truly don’t understand the apparent need to ‘explain’ Susan. At this point, what is there to explain? She’s his granddaughter, that was never a weird concept in the first place. The EU’s (unnecessary) explanations are interesting, but this attempt at making her the magical wish daughter or granddaughter of a future incarnation in a timey wimey way… Is it really just so we don’t have to think about who her grandmother is? Like, being blunt, is it just so they can say ‘there is 0 proof the Doctor ever had sex’??

I genuinely would love a world where they just never felt the need to explain classic things and just left them :sob:

Many women in Nu Who have to be mystery boxes.
All the showrunners of Nu Who have been men.

Rory kinda had the mystery box elements going for him…
