Episode Discussion: The Devil's Chord

It’s the wasted potential that really kills this episode for me: I like the Beatles too much to like this story. And sadly the resolution is very lackluster. I do like Maestro, though, I hope we see them again.

I’ve never been much of a Beatles guy tbh so maybe that’s why I didn’t mind how little they were used

I love Devil’s Chord. It’s one of my favorite episodes in the season. Maestro’s an amazing villain and I like how the Doctor is scared of them at first.

I like that too but my only problem is Ruby says something like “you’re never scared” and yet her only experience with him is him being scared of the Bogeyman.

So either she’s just repeating what he said in that ep and she totally believes it, or this story was supposed to come later in the season!

I really think that DC would have worked better later in the season if not only because of this.

Maybe a montage showing offscreen travels for Ruby15 in the 6 month gap would’ve helped, but agree it felt a bit odd that line. Still, love this episode it’s SO Who and SO camp

There’s was no six month gap, Ruby is brand new to TARDIS travel.
RTD said it was some sort of weird time dialation that happens to companions. Apparently it was to explain how Sarah Jane fits into UNIT dating - which he also claimed that he didn’t care about in the same interview

I think it was a mistake due to reordering the episodes and RTD just made some stuff up to try and explain it away lol

I think I saw someone on Twitter last year do a deep dive into filming pics and dwm issues etc and found pretty conclusive evidence it was always Episode 2. The 6 month line being retconned by RTD in an interview is typical RTD :sob:

But from the timeline of the show:

  • Ruby enters the TARDIS Christmas Eve
  • The events of Space Babies happens
  • At the start of The Devil’s Chord, it is implied that this is Ruby’s first trip because she gets to choose where to go
  • So why does he ask her what the date is at home? He should have no doubt that it’s Christmas. And Ruby hasn’t been home since Christmas, so why on earth would she say it’s June/July?

It just makes no sense to me, she must know that the last time she was at home it was Christmas. If there is some kind of time dilation, does she have fake memories of being at home in June?

It makes zero sense :person_shrugging:
Exactly like the rest of this “story” :winking_face_with_tongue:

I must add this to my list ‘Stuff RTD Didn’t Need to Say That Needlessly Complicate Things’.

This is probably massive cope but I’m a firm believer in RTD is making up nonsense again to hide the fact that it’s going to be plot relevant in Season 2.

And then Boom says that’s her first alien planet too. So, like, her first alien planet was 6 months into TARDIS travel?!

Some relatively bizarre news, Devil’s Chord has been nominated for an Emmy!

I just saw this in the wild on the internet and was very pleasantly surprised! It is a great dance sequence to be fair to the choreographer, I guess it just goes to show that all Doctor Who has to do to get Emmy noms is put in things that do not belong and never explain why they’re there haha. (Yes yes, I know, the power of music returning to the world was making things weird for a bit OR SOMETHING lol)
