After thinking about this more, I think I figured it out. It’s a combination of how high quality filming is today, where everything is super clean and clear (as opposed to the graininess of film) and the cleaness of Mr. Ring-a-Ding. He lacks the fuzzy, jittery edges of hand-drawn animation. On top of that, his movements just feel a little stiff. It looks like a very surface level recreation. He doesn’t flow.
There’s a difference between slightly jerky and having three stills with no transition animations. They look like paper dolls.
I think I can see what you’re getting at, even if I don’t agree. I’ve just had a look at a Roger Rabbit clip and can’t see a world of difference.
I think for the Doctor and Belinda the one complaint I had is that they were only on one background - but imagine changing backgrounds would have been extra expense and we have to remember there would be a budget on this, Disney money or not.
