I think this might be the equivalent of ‘going down with the ship’ but, rewatching A Christmas Carol last night, it had an emotional ending but was slow. Whereas The Husbands of River Song is at least as poignant but has fantastic humour, races along with gusto, and has amazing chemistry between the two leads. Normally I’d be championing the Eleventh Doctor, but not this time.

These are both 10/10 episodes but the whole of A Christmas Carol is a beautifully constructed emotional roller coast whereas in The Husbands of River Song, it’s only the final five minutes.

So my personal choice was The Husbands of River Song because of its goofy fun, but A Christmas Carol is very much a wonderful experience for the holidays.
There’s really nothing quite like the journey Gambon takes us on as he turns from miserable to good. It’s so creative and so fun, a truly worthy winner.
