I hope I’m charitably allowed to say that I think Matt Brittin is already proving the case for why hiring a tech guy formerly of Google who has no actual experience in the realms of production or even really media is a very bad idea, and that it is totally tone-deaf incompetent to sing praises for Generative AI right as the current industry chatter is worrying about how exactly many people at the BBC are not still going to have a job by the end of the year.
I think for a household name the best option would be someone who’s passionate about the show and may stay on even if the money isn’t good. A Ryan Gosling type who tends to opt more for passion projects rather than always going for projects that will make them more money.
Yeah agreed, Tennant was great casting not only because he is an excellent actor, but also because he loved the show and stayed with it for a while, same can be said of Capaldi (although Tennant wasn’t a household name when cast).
It’s tricky because I think my biggest hope for the next Doctor that is cast, is longevity. I’m sick of the three seasons and regenerate cycle. I find it a bit formulaic and it doesn’t allow for much variation in how the Doctor is portrayed. One of the best elements of the show is when you have different production teams working on the same show in different eras, but with the same cast. I find it has become very much new Doctor means new companion, new production team etc. I’d love to have some carry overs between series, whether that be companion, production team or both, and to have a Doctor who lasts for four full series, it would be a first in the show since Tom Baker (which is wild) and I think it would solidify the show, the brand and all that it encompasses for a new generation.
One of my favourite moments from David Tennant’s era is when his Doctor sees Sarah Jane for the first time in School Reunion. You could tell that David Tennant didn’t even need to act there, as he was clearly genuinely thrilled to be with Elisabeth Sladen. I’d love to see something like that again, but this time with a new Doctor meeting Carole Ann Ford as Susan Foreman. We came close with Ncuti Gatwa, if only they could have concluded those brief cameos in Interstellar Song Contest and Wish World with a big reunion between the Doctor and Susan.

Doctor Who made in Scotland? SIGN ME UP! [1]
it’ll never happen ↩︎
the BBC launched a competitive tender, a bake-off-style process
Wait, why are they describing competitive tenders as bake-off-style?
Are our brains so rotted we have to describe everything like TV shows ![]()
Next election will they say “thousands go to the polls in a Traiters-style vote where the current Prime Minister might become The Weakest Link and get fired like in The Apprentice, as the public decide which party’s pitch to back, like what they do on Dragon’s Den”?
I think it’s meaning the Bake Off tender as it’s one of the biggest known tenders that happened when it switched from BBC to Channel 4
Oh, I thought they meant each potential studio will have to bake a cake and feed it to Paul Hollywood.
Instead of shaking the hand of the winner and going “congratulations, you won the tender”, they point at them and go “bro you cooked.”
It’s all on theme.
Some really interesting bidders here! I personally would be super intrigued to see Doctor Who made in Scotland or even just outside of Wales (don’t get me wrong, I love Wales and I can understand the desire to keep it there given all the show has done for the region, but I wonder if moving production somewhere else could contribute to getting some new voices and perspectives involved and make the show a bit fresher again).
Maybe a controversial statement, but I would prefer for the tender to be awarded to an outside party over BBC Studios. They’ve been heavily involved in Doctor Who over the last twenty years and I’m not convinced sending it back to them would result in anything substantially different from what we’ve seen in that time, especially given that quote about the David Tennant and Matt Smith runs in the Deadline article. We can’t go back to those runs, they’re in the past, the next era of the show needs to be more ambitious than just mimicking the 2006 - 2013 period.
I read this and thought to myself “yeah that would be cool we’ve never had a Scottish Doctor before”. I’ve not had enough coffee this morning ![]()
IMO I’d rather it stayed with the BBC but the prospect of it being made in Scotland is amazing. I just doubt STV will stand up against the others budget wise
There’s a great list of Scottish actors I’d love to see take the part. David Tennant, that guy from Broadchurch, David Tennant, the demon from Good Omens, the bloke that played Tony Baddingham in Rivals, and David Tennant!
Don’t forget David Tennant, the guy that voiced a villain in Colditz!
You mean Daft Jamie from ‘Medicinal Purposes’? That’d never work!
You know what’s even worse, I read that and thought to myself “David Tennant? He’s not Scottish?” I was thinking of McCoy, Capaldi and Gatwa and now I’m on my way to find myself a lot of caffeine ![]()
Anything that eliminates Tennant from the running and prevents him getting a third go is fine by me! ![]()
Did you hear he was in Harry Potter?
Cancelled. Next!
