I dont like the bbcs doctor who podcasts they don’t seen genuine and part of doctor who is criticising it and without that its just bland for me
I understand where you’re getting at but they have criticised it in small ways in the epsodes. It’s not all fluff. And it’s great to have Russel T Davies involved in it!
Thing is, it’s a bit like when DWM gets criticised for not criticising the show enough. That isn’t it’s purpose. The official podcast’s purpose is to celebrate the show and give us some behind the scenes info + a bit of comment. If you want to criticise Doctor Who - or hear criticism of it, my god there are plenty of places on the internet to go and plenty of podcasts to tune into. One podcast, which is an official one from the BBC, not being very critical is hardly a terrible thing.
I am currently reading through the Virgin New Adventures and find that “The Real McCoy” has got some interesting takes on both those books (they review a selection of them) as well as the 7th Doctor’s televised stories.
“The Writer’s Room” always goes to the top of my podcast playlist - their approach to script analysis is really great.
Yeah, Real McCoy is great. Their last episode was Human nature in May 2023 though.
I’m going to get in trouble here… but I find US podcasts really hard to listen to. Something about the accent in that medium really grates on me. Therefore I tend to restrict anything I do listen to to UK or at a push (like Sirens of Time) Antipodean ones.
I did not realise it had been that long. I tend to listen to the episodes after I have read the book and I am only at “The Dimension Riders” right now… I hope they return and it is not a genuine podfade.
Yeah there are also podcasts I have had to stop listening to due to accents that my brain for some reason found grating. …
Glad it’s not just me!
Personally, I regularly listen to WHO Corner to Corner, The Doctor Who Podcast, and Radio Free Skaro. They have fun discussions on new and old episodes, news, rumours, and DW culture. I tend to skip parts I don’t find interesting, so their length isn’t usually a problem.
Another podcast I’ve been listening to since the start is Doctor Who’s That? The three hosts and a revolving chair of guests watch one DW story at a time and discuss their opinions on it, as well as the people and things happening behind the scenes. The fun thing is that one of the hosts is a DW superfan who’s seen everything; one is a Nu Who fan; and one hasn’t seen anything prior to the podcast. So it’s fun hearing them speculate and theorise about upcoming stories and hera fresh takes on familiar stories from someone who hasn’t watched them a billion times already They upload an episode like once a month these days, and they are up to Tomb of the Cybermen so far.
Ooo these recommendations sound great! I’ve really enjoyed The Long Way Round which (a bit like Doctor Who’s That by the sounds of things) has a newbie watching with someone who’s watched all of nuwho (it’s all post 2005). They have pretty long episodes and the best character/theme analysis of any of the podcasts I’ve tried so far…
Welcome to the forum Rhiow!
Finish Big is one I just found. I was searching on YouTube for reviews of the early episodes & they are going through the main range from the beginning. So a great one for us Audio Club members, I love the hosts - funny, irreverent & knowledgeable. They don’t pull any punches but do it with good humour.
Sounds interesting
Thanks for the heads up on that. Added to my listen queue.
I’m not an avid podcast listener but I quite like The Review of Death. Humour can be a bit vulgar if that’s a turn-off, but I almost always find it a good laugh and being every second Thursday makes it easy to keep up with.
Though I have listened to Radio Free Skaro once or twice and enjoyed it, and while I’m not a regular listener I do listen to The Power of 3 in the lead up to the Classic Who blu-ray releases because they do some really interesting interviews with those involved with the releases.
I don’t listen to any traditional Doctor Who podcast, but I do follow someone who does video reviews.

His stuff is great, and I do watch him after a serial to see how we differ.
Mainly I do reaction channels. It gets me that first time fix that I now can’t have.
Does anyone want me to post them here?
Chris Stokes is great and someone I know a very little from chatting to him on Gallifrey Base (although he’s long since left there). I should contact him and invite him over here.
