That is obviously the reason but it doesn’t mean it makes for a good creative decision. Especially as it’s happening all at the same time in separate ranges and enough to take me out of the stories. When things smack of production decisions instead of creative ones so much and so frequently, I can’t enjoy the fiction.
Plus, older Steven could meet Treloar, older Jamie and Zoe could meet McGann, older Vicki… You get the point. Putting them with the Doctors they’ve just left doesn’t feel like the right choice at all when it’s happening as often as it currently is. It’s not providing the fresh new adventures for these Doctors that I would want from them.
Sure, hew towards the era still, that’s the charm. But actually doing this several times over isn’t doing that, it’s just repeating themselves to a comic degree.
Most definitely not what I think these ranges should be doing.

To be fair, that’s why the Companion Chronicles were a good thing. The companions sounding older was never a problem because it was often explained by the framing. And in a more organic way than all of them coming back to travel with the Doctor.
(C’mon it happened with Jamie, Zoe, Jo, Nyssa, Peri and Mel, though it wasn’t that much time for the last two. And if you count companions the Doctor meets as they are older the list becomes enormous, but I find it easier to forgive since it’s just that. Them meeting again, not necessarily travelling together).

But to play devil’s advocate: I do think you can get a lot out of companions coming back to actually travel. Vicki’s ending was extremely bittersweet for me, so the thought of her meeting the Doctor again makes me happy.
When Mel comes back in Seventh’s audios she is the best part of it, the problem is that the stories are not very good. It is an interesting concept to place Mel against a older version of Seven given he changed so much, though.
All of Peri’s comebacks are for the better, in my opinion, and the post-trial ones even more so since it explores the consequences of an extremely unthoughful and bitter ending in TV. And though it has its fair share of stinkers, I love the older Nyssa arc.
